POLYGON
Polygon comes from the Greek
words “poly” which means
“many” and “gon” which means
“angle”. So, polygon means
many angles.
CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYGON
• A polygon is a closed plane figure formed
by three or more segments called sides.
• Each side intersects exactly two other
sides, once at each endpoint.
• No two sides with a common endpoint are
collinear.
A polygon is a closed plane figure formed by three or more

• No two sides with a common endpoint are collinear.
• Each line segment is called the side of
the polygon and each endpoint where
the sides meet is called the vertex of
the polygon.
• A polygon is named using capital letters
by writing their consecutive vertices in
order.
For example, the polygon below can be named polygon
WXYZ or XYZW or YZWX or ZWXY.

Vertex – a point where W X

lines meet.

Diagonal – non-
consecutive
points/vertices. Z Y
TYPES OF POLYGON
Regular Polygon a regula
polygon has equal sides
and
angles.
REGULAR POLYGON
TYPES OF POLYGON
An irregular polygon is 2D shape
that has straight sides that are not
equal to each other and angles
that are not equal to each other.
IRREGULAR POLYGON
TYPES OF POLYGON
Convex Polygon
a convex polygon is a closed
shape, where none of the
vertices are pointed inward.
CONVEX POLYGON
CONVEX
AND
NON CONVEX
(CONCAVE)
• A polygon is convex if no line that contains a side of the
polygon contains a point in the interior of the polygon.
• A polygon is convex if no diagonal is in the exterior of the
polygon.

CONVEX CONCAVE
Directions: State whether the given polygon is convex or
concave. Classify each polygon if it is regular or irregular.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.
1. CONCAVE - IRREGULAR

3. CONVEX-IRREGULAR
2. CONVEX-REGULAR

4. CONCAVE-REGULAR 5. CONCAVE- IRREGULAR
