SUBATOMIC
PARCTICLES
• PROTONS
• NEUTRONS
• ELECTRONS
01
PROTONS
WHAT IS PROTONS?
It is a subatomic particles that is found
in the nucleus of every atom. It has a
positive electrical charge. The number
of protons in an element's is called the
atomic number.Protons are found in the
nucleus of the atom. This is a tiny,
dense region at the center of the
atom.Protons have a mass of 1 atomic
mass unit (amu), which is about
1.67×10−27 kilograms. It was
discovered by Ernest Rutherford.
02
NEUTRONS
WHAT IS NEUTRONS?
A subatomic particle of about the same
mass as a proton but without an electric
charge. The main function of neutrons is to
contribute to the binding energy or nuclear
glue that holds the nucleus itself
together.Neutrons are always located with
protons. The mass of a neutron is roughly
equal to 1.008 atomic mass units. When
converted into kilograms, the mass of the
neutron can be approximated to 1.67*10-
27 kg. It was discovered by physicist
James Chadwick.
03
ELECTRONS
WHAT IS ELECTRONS?
A stable subatomic particle with a charge of
negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as
the primary carrier of electricity in solids. Electrons
are found outside the nucleus that is surrounding
the nucleus of an atom. The rest mass of the
electron is 9.1093837015 × 10−31 kg, which is
only 1/1,836the mass of a proton. It was discovered
by physicist J.J. Thomson.

IMPORTANCE OF
ISOTOPE NOTATION
ISOTOPE NOTATION, ALSO KNOWN AS
NUCLEAR NOTATION, IS IMPORTANT
BECAUSE IT ALLOWS US EASILY
DETERMINE AN ISOTOPE'S MASS
NUMBER, ATOMIC NUMBER, AND TO
DETERMINE THE NUMBER OF
NEUTRONS AND PROTONS IN THE
NUCLEUS USING A VISUAL SYMBOLS.
