Introduction
Overview of Pakistan’s agriculture sector, its contribution to the economy, and the
challenges and opportunities it faces.

• Agriculture contributes to 24% of Pakistan’s GDP and employs 42% of the workforce.
• The sector faces numerous challenges, including water scarcity, climate change, lack of
modern farming techniques, poor infrastructure, and low productivity. However, there
are also several opportunities for growth and development.
Water Scarcity
Pakistan is facing a severe water crisis, which is a major challenge facing the agriculture
sector.

◦ Causes of water scarcity include population growth, mismanagement of water resources,
and climate change.
◦ Potential solutions include improved water management practices, investment in
infrastructure, and development of drought-resistant crops.

Climate Change
Climate change has a significant impact on Pakistan’s agriculture sector, including
changing weather patterns, droughts, and floods.

◦ Potential consequences of climate change include crop failures, food shortages, and
economic losses.

◦ Potential solutions include sustainable farming practices, use of climate-resilient crops,
and investment in infrastructure.

Lack of Modern Farming Techniques
The lack of modern farming techniques is a challenge facing the agriculture sector in
Pakistan.

◦ Consequences of using outdated techniques include low productivity, poor quality crops,
and higher costs.

◦ Potential solutions include promoting the use of modern farming techniques, investment
in research and development, and education and training for farmers.

Poor Infrastructure
Poor infrastructure is a challenge facing the agriculture sector in Pakistan.

◦ Consequences of poor infrastructure include inadequate storage and transportation
facilities, which leads to post-harvest losses and higher costs for farmers.

◦ Potential solutions include investment in infrastructure, such as building storage and
transportation facilities, and improving the road network.
Low Productivity
Low productivity is a challenge facing the agriculture sector in Pakistan.

◦ Factors contributing to low productivity include outdated farming techniques, lack of
access to credit and technology, and inadequate irrigation and water management
systems.

◦ Potential solutions include promoting the use of modern farming techniques, increasing
access to credit and technology, and improving irrigation and water management
systems.
Opportunities for Growth
Despite the challenges, there are several opportunities for growth and development in
Pakistan’s agriculture sector.

◦ Opportunities include increasing exports, promoting the use of modern farming
techniques, and developing value-added products.
