IRRIGATION and DRAINAGE
ENGINEERING
 General:
 The subject of irrigation has assumed a worldwide importance since
it holds the key to provide food to the billions of people living in
developed and developing countries. The science of irrigation
engineering vary from situation to situation. In riverless middle east
it depends on small discharges of wells and springs while in
countries like Pakistan, India, America, Iraq and Egypt it is based on
huge river discharges. The man made canal systems may be
handling the discharges even larger than that in other countries.
 Pakistan has one of the world’s largest irrigation system with a
many dams, barrages, more than 43000 miles of canals as well as
thousands of other hydraulic structures.

IRRIGATION and DRAINAGE
ENGINEERING
 Objectives:
 To educate students about importance, development and
management issues of irrigation network of Pakistan.
 Application of various crop irrigation techniques and design
of irrigation channels using different approaches.
 To introduce students about the basics of the drainage.
 Introduction to Irrigation
 What is Irrigation?
 Irrigation is an artificial application of water to the land or
soil. It is used to assist the growing of agricultural crops,
maintenance of landscapes, and revegetation of disturbed
soils in dry areas and during periods of inadequate rain fall.
 Irrigation is often studied together with drainage, which is
the natural or artificial removal of surface water and
subsurface water from given area.
Introduction to Irrigation
 It is practically a science of planning and designing a
water supply system for agricultural land to protect the
crops from bad effect of drought or low rainfall.
operation of Engineering Projects for the control and
use of water.
 It includes the construction of weirs, dams, barrages and
canal systems for regular supply of water to cultivable
lands.
 History of Irrigation
• Existence of irrigation canal during reign of King
Scorpion, Egypt- 3200 BC
• Construction of a Diversion Dam by King Menes to
redirect flow of River Nile, 3000 BC.
• Gages were installed to measure the stage of Nile in
3000BC.
• The first system of Kanats (Karez) for the purpose of
irrigation was constructed by Admiral Skylax in Egypt
about 500 b.c.
History of Irrigation
 The kanats of Tehran are over 280 years old.
 Pakistan’s perenial irrigation system is world’s third largest,
irrigating some 35 million acres with a total canal mileage of
43000 miles and a discharge of 230000 cusecs.
