BIODIVERSITY
WHAT IS BIODIVER-
SITY?
- refers to the biological
diversity to describe the
variety of life forms at all
levels, from microorganisms
to  wild flora and fauna,
besides the human species
(Bueno,2019).
Also biodiversity is the amount of
variety of life on earth. It is the
number of different species of
plants, animals, and
microorganisms. It includes
organisms from earth’s vastly
different ecosystems, including
deserts, rainforests, coral reefs,
grasslands, tundra, and polar ice
It is also the variation among living
organisms from different sources including
terrestrial, marine and desert ecosystems,
and the ecological complexes of which they
are a part.
TERRESTRIAL MARINE DESERT

A terrestrial ecosystem is
a land-based community
of organisms and the
interactions of biotic and
abiotic components in a
given area.
TERRESTRIAL MARINE DESERT

A terrestrial ecosystem is Marine ecosystems are

a land-based community aquatic environments
of organisms and the with high levels of
interactions of biotic and dissolved salt. These
abiotic components in a include the open ocean,
given area. the deep-sea ocean, and
coastal marine
ecosystems.
TERRESTRIAL MARINE DESERT

A terrestrial ecosystem is Marine ecosystems are Deserts are barren areas

a land-based community aquatic environments of land characterised by
of organisms and the with high levels of extremely high or low
interactions of biotic and dissolved salt. These temperatures, with low
abiotic components in a include the open ocean, rainfall and scarce or no
given area. the deep-sea ocean, and vegetation.
coastal marine
ecosystems.
Furthermore, biodiversity holds ecological and
economic significance. It provides us with
nourishment, housing, fuel, clothing and
several other resources. It also extracts
monetary benefits through tourism. Therefore,
it is very important to have a good knowledge
of biodiversity for a sustainable livelihood.
Three Types of Biodiversity
1. Genetic - difference between
the genes of particular species
2. Species - where a
 particular
  variety of animal
or plant may occur in many
different shapes, sizes, and
colors.
3. Ecosystem - where a habitat
contains a number of
species which depend on each
other
WHAT IS BIOTECHNOLOGY

Biotechnology uses biological systems, living

organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify
products or processes for a specific use.

Genetic Engineering is a technique that allows genes

and DNA to be transferred from one source to another.
It leads to the production of living modified organisms
(LMO's) or genetically modified organisms (GMO's).
• Modern biotechnology it aims to develop new precision
tools and diagnostics; speed up breeding gains and
efficiency; develop pest and disease resistant crops; combat
salinity, drought and problems of agriculture; enhance
nutritional quality of food; increase crop varieties and
choice; reduce inputs and production costs; and increase
profits ( Bragdon et. al., 2005)

• Modern biotechnology gives scientists molecular tools for
obtaining a better understanding of the structures and
function of genes in living organisms.
What is
Genetic
Engineering?
• Genetic engineering is the process of using recombinant DNA
(rDNA) technology to alter the genetic makeup of an organism.
Traditionally, humans have manipulated genomes indirectly by
controlling breeding and selecting offspring with desired traits.
• Genetic engineering is the artificial manipulation, modification,
and recombination of DNA or other nucleic acid molecules to
modify an organism.
• Genetic engineering, also called genetic modification or genetic
manipulation, is the direct manipulation of an organism's genes
using biotechnology (Wikipedia)
• Genetic engineering is used by scientists to enhance or modify
the characteristics of an individual organism.
An example  : genetic engineering can be used to produce
plants that have a higher nutritional value or can
tolerate exposure to herbicides.
