BIODIVERSITY

AND THE
HEALTHY
SOCIETY
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY

PRESENTED BY:
MS. MELDRED CAINGCOY
OBJECTIVE
determine the interrelatedness of society,
environment, and health;

create a diagram that would show the

relatedness of species in forming up a diverse
and healthy society without compromising one
another, and

Identify everyday tasks and evaluate whether

they contribute to the wellness and health of
biodiversity and society or not.
Where do you live?
BIO + DIVERSITY
bios = LIFE diversitas = VARIETY
DEFINITION OF TERMS
BIODIVERSITY vast variety of life forms in the entire Earth.

ECOSYSTEM it is a community or group of living organisms that live in

and interact with each other in a specific environment.

BIOTIC a set of living organisms such as animals, plants or micro-

(BIOCENOSIS) organisms, that are in constant interaction and are, therefore,
in a situation of interdependence.

ABIOTIC a particular physical environment with specific physical

(BIOTOPE) characteristics such as the climate, temperature, humidity,
concentration of nutrients or pH.
INTRODUCTION
Decrease in biodiversity is eminent worldwide.
Humans have industrialized the natural habitat of wildlife as well as marine life.
Earth might enter the sixth mass extinction event according to experts.
Biodiversity and
biodiversity
Ecosystem
biodiversity of an area has a large impact on the
ecosystem stability of that area.
biodiversity provides functioning ecosystems
that supply oxygen, clean air and water, ecosystem
pollination of plants, pest control, wastewater
treatment and many ecosystem services.

biotic & abiotic

changes in biodiversity

have erratic effects not only in wildlife or marine

life but also in human beings.
Trees and plants would be affected in the land.
The animals, insects, and all types of life forms in
the cleared area would either be displaced or
most likely be killed.
The food chain might be damaged.
Threats to Biodiversity
Habitat loss and destruction.
Alterations in ecosystem composition.
Over-exploitation Over-hunting,
Pollution and contamination
Global climate change.
