BIODIVERSITY AND THE

HEALTHY SOCIETY
WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY?

 Biodiversity is defined as
the vast variety of life
forms in the entire earth.
It encompasses all kinds
of life forms, from the
single-celled organisms
to the largest multi-
celled organisms.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF
BIODIVERSITY
 HIGH BIODIVERSITY
- When biodiversity is
high, it means there
are many different
types of organisms
and species.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF BIODIVERSITY

 LOW BIODIVERSITY -
when there are a few
prominent species and a
low number of other
species within the
habitat.
LEVELS OF BIODIVERSITY
ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY
SPECIES DIVERSITY
GENETIC DIVERSITY
WHAT IS ECOSYSTEM

It is a community or group

of living organisms that
live in and interact with
each other in a specific
environment.
ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY

 Ecosystem diversity refers to the diversity

of a place at the level of ecosystem
 The diversity of an ecosystem is
dependent on the physical characteristics
of the environment, the diversity of
species present, and the interactions that
the species have with each other and with
the environment.
.
COMMUNITY AND ECOSYSTEM DIVERSITY

1. Alpha Diversity: It refers to the

diversity of organisms sharing the
same community or habitat.
2. Beta Diversity: It refers to the
diversity of organisms sharing two
habitat.
3. Gamma Diversity: Diversity of the
habitat over the total landscape or
geographical area.
SPECIES DIVERSITY

 It refers to the variety of species

within a region.
 It is generally a species richness.
GENETIC DIVERSITY

 It is a level of diversity that refers

to the total number of genetic
characteristics in the genetic
make-up of a species.
 It is distinguished from genetic
variability, which describes the
tendency of genetic
characteristics to vary.
CHANGES IN BIODIVERSITY

 Alteration in any system could bring varied

effects. A change in biodiversity could have
erratic effects not only in wildlife or marine
life but also in human beings. We can clearly
infer that when our ecosystem is not well
taken care of, biodiversity encounters
changes that may impact human health on
such different.
THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY

 Habitat loss and destruction

 Alteration in ecosystem composition.
 Over-exploitation
 Pollution and contamination
 Global climate change
HABITAT LOSS AND DESTRUCTION

Habitat loss negatively
influences biodiversity
directly through its impact on
species abundance, genetic
diversity, species richness,
species distribution, and also
indirectly.
ALTERATION IN ECOSYSTEM COMPOSITION

When a habitat is
destroyed, the carrying
capacity for indigenous plants,
animals, and other organisms
is reduced so populations
decline, sometimes up to the
level of extinction.
OVER-EXPLOITATION

Overexploitation of natural
resources such as trees can
lead to habitat loss. Organisms
that previously lived around
those natural resources are
displaced, resulting in
biodiversity loss
POLLUTION AND CONTAMINATION

 All forms of pollution pose a

serious threat to biodiversity, but
in particular nutrient loading,
primarily of nitrogen and
phosphorus, which is a major and
increasing cause of biodiversity
loss and ecosystem dysfunction.
GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

Warmer temperatures over

time are changing weather
patterns and disrupting the
usual balance of nature.
This poses many risks to
human beings and all other
forms of life on Earth
CONSEQUENCES
OF
BIODIVERSITY LOSS
HEALTH, BIOLOGY, AND BIODIVERSITY

 Almost all living organisms are dependent to their

environment to live and reproduce. Basic needs of living
organisms such as air, water, food, and habitat are provided
by its environment.
 Environmental hazards increase the risk of cancer, heart
disease, asthma, and many other illnesses. These hazards can
be physical, such as pollution, toxic chemicals, and food
contaminants, or they can be social
“The Earth will retain its most
striking feature, its
biodiversity, only if humans
have the prescience to do so.
This will occur, it seems, only
if we realize the extent to
which we use biodiversity
