THE EFFECT OF LIGHT AND DARK

REACTIONS ON THE GROWTH

PERFORMANCE OF MUNG BEANS
Group 7
Definition of Terms

Sprout. To produce leaves, hair, or other new developing parts, or (of leaves, hair,
and other developing parts) to begin to grow.
Germination. The process of a seed starting to grow, or the act of causing a seed to
start growing.
Introduction
• Mung Beans ( Vigna Radiata) are the tiny seeds of a bean plant, commonly
sprouted and eaten, and are among the most popular sprouts in the world.Dried
mung beans have a long shelf life and can be sprouted relatively quickly..
• Mung beans are high in nutrients and antioxidants, which may provide health
benefits. In fact, they may protect against heat stroke, aid digestive health,
promote weight loss, lower "bad" LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar
levels, boost the immune system and help detoxify the body. They are good
because they supply protein and fiber, protect the liver, and you can eat them
daily. Mung beans are rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber, oligosaccharides,
and polyphenols. The protein content in mung beans is between 20 and 30%,
making them a great source of plant-based protein.
• Mung bean sprouts and germinating seeds show great benefits in managing lipid
metabolism. Based on research, the mung bean sprouts that grew in the light is
will be taller than the mung bean sprouts that grew in the dark. The mung bean
sprouts that grew in the dark did not produce any leaves.
Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the effect of Light and Dark reactions on the growth
performance of mung beans.
Specifically, this study will attempt to answer the following questions:

1. What is the importance of Mung beans?

2. What are the benefits of Mung beans to our health?
3. Where will Mung beans grow faster in light or dark place?
Objectives
The purpose of this study is/are:

1. State the significance and benefits of Mung beans to our health.

2. Examine where Mung beans grown faster in the light or dark.
3. Observe the growth performance of Mung beans in light or dark.

Hypothesis
This study was guided by a null hypothesis tested at a 0.05 level of significance.

Ho: There is no significant differences between light and dark reaction on the growth
performance of mung beans.
Significance of the Study
Teachers. They will know the importance and the benefits of mung
beans. They will understand why we need to eat vegetables like mung
beans and how it benefits them if they share it with their students.
Community. It helps people to know the benefits and significance of
mung beans for their health. To reduce the likelihood of contracting a
common disease by knowing the importance of mung beans to our body
and its benefits. Also, to know where they can grow fast mung beans in
a couple of months.
Future Researcher. They can use this as their reference and be benefited
by searching more information to increase their knowledge and
understanding about their research.
Scope and Delimitation

This research focused mainly on examining and observing the growth

performance of mung beans in light and dark environments. To determine where
mung beans will grow faster in order to apply their benefits to the people who will
eat them. This research start conducting on the 30th day of November 2022 and will
be conducted at Purok Duldol F.L Pena Brgy. Calubihan,Kabasalan , Zamboanga
Sibugay.
Related Literature
Mung beans are seeds from the Fabaceae family, commonly known as the legume, pea, or bean
family. They are an affordable source of protein, fiber, iron, and vitamins that offer many health
benefits. People should increase their intake of beans gradually to reduce the risk of intestinal
discomfort, Kathy W. Warwick, R.D., CDE (2020).
According to Katherine Marengo LDN, R.D. (2019), also suggests that mung beans may have a
range of potential health benefits, but further studies are needed to confirm these findings. Eating
more legumes can be part of a healthful eating pattern and an effective way of incorporating more
plant-based foods into a person’s diet.
Mung bean is a warm season and frost-intolerant plant. Mung bean is suitable for being planted in
temperate, sub-tropical and tropical regions. The most suitable temperature for mung bean's
germination and growth is 15-18 °C. Mung bean has high adaptability to various soil types, while the
best pH of the soil is between 6.2 and 7.2. Mung bean is a short-day plant and long days will delay
its flowering and podding. (Aditya Pratap, Sanjeev Gupta.(2022).
Research Design
• In this research, the researcher uses an observational research design, which
aims to observe the growth performance of the mung beans in light and dark
reactions. By this, we can determine the difference between the two plants, by
measuring their growth and observing their color every week.

Research Setting
The study is conducted at Samson’s residence. The pot was put in the front
yard of the residence where it will receive enough sunlight and air, and the other
pot was put in the kitchen where it cannot be directed by the sunlight. Also, the soil
is loam that has perfect balance, it holds moisture but also drains well, allows
oxygen to reach plants’ roots, and is rich in humus (organic matter). The residence is
also located at Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Data Gathering Tools
The researchers used a ruler to measure the differences in height
to determine the effects of Light and Dark reactions on the growth
performance of mung beans.

Materials and Procedure

The materials which the researcher used were:

 2 small pots were used to put the plant
 2 cups of loam soil were used to plant the mung beans seed
 2 regular-sized plastic cups were used to soak the mung beans before planting.
 30 healthy monggo seeds
 Tap water use to sprinkle on the plant in order to grow
 Ruler used to measure the height of the plant
 Measuring Cup used to measure the water
 Strainer was used to drain the soaked seeds.
 Pentle pen
 Large shoebox
 Cellular Phone/ camera used to take a picture of plants
The steps that the researchers followed were:
1. Gather all materials.
2. Soak monggo seeds in water, remove the floating ones, then drain out the water.
3. Label the plastic cup with “Set-up A” (with sunlight) and the other plastic cup with “Set-up B” (without
sunlight).
4. Place the pots.
5. Put one cup of loam soil in Set-up A and Set-up B.
6. Randomly plant 15 monggo seeds in each set-up.
7. Drizzle ¼ cup of tap water in both set-ups.
8. Place Set-up A outside where it can be exposed to sunlight.
9. Place Set-up B inside the large shoebox indoors.
10. Put water in both set-ups with ¼ cup of tap water once every other day.
11. Take pictures of both set-ups every week for documentation.
12. Measure the length of the munggo sprout in Set-up A and Set-up B.
Data Gathering
1. Heights of sprout of the mung beans at first week of the study. The researchers gathered the data through
the use of a ruler in the first week (in centimeters)
2. Heights of sprout in centimeters at 2nd week of the study. The researchers measured the height of sprout
of mung beans to obtain the height in the second week of the study.
3. Heights of sprout in centimeters at 3rd week of the study. The researchers determined the height of the
sprout of mung beans by measuring it using a ruler.
4. Heights of roots in centimeters at 4th week of the study. The researchers used ruler to determine the
height of the sprout of mung beans in the 4th week of the study.
5. Height of roots and stem in centimeters at 5 th week of the study. The researcher measured the height of
roots using ruler to gather the data.
6. Heights of sprout in centimeters at the end of the study. The researchers measured the height of the
sprout of mung beans to determine its height.
7. Height of mung bean sprout in centimeters. The researchers measured the sprout of mung beans after it
was observed to determine the different heights of mung beans.
8. Mung bean sprout. The researcher measured the plant growth by following the ruler with the various
invited observer.

Statistical Tool to be Used

The significance of the study was tested using the t-test method to be
able to analyze and determine the different effects of light and dark
reactions on the growth performance of mung beans.
The statistical problem
The following data are the measured height (in centimeters) of sprouts of light and dark to the growth
performance of mung beans. It has an invited observer to see the results.

Test the null hypothesis (Ho) that there is no significant difference between the effect of light and dark on the
growth performance of mung beans.
Plant A (Dark) Plant B (Light)

20 cm 10 cm

29 cm 18 cm

31 cm 22 cm

33 cm 26 cm

37 cm 28 cm
Justification of the statistical method

t-test was used since we were comparing the difference between two independent
groups. The subject of the study was the measured height of two independent variables.
The presentation, analysis, and interpretation of the data

Table 1
Plant A (Light)

This table displays the growth performance of Mung

beans in daylight. As we can see, it represents the first
week of growth, and its color is a healthy green,
indicating that the plant is healthy. In the second week of
observation, it had healthy green leaves, and its roots grew
longer than fourteen centimeters. It had healthy green
leaves by the third week of observation. It has strong roots
and a tiny, hairy appearance. In the fourth week of
gathering data, the plant grows longer and a healthy dark
green, it also has a branch. In the fifth week of observation,
the plant is longer than in the fourth week of observation,
has more branches, and its roots and leaves have a tiny,
hairy appearance.
Table 2
Plant B (Dark)
Results
Based on the results the p-value is 0.049 and our t-value is 2.32. Our t-value is greater than the t-
table value which is 2.306, which means it is significant so we accept H 1 (alternative hypothesis); Therefore, at
the 5% level of significance, there is enough evidence to reject the claim that there is no differences between
the effect of light and dark on the growth performance of mung beans.
Conclusion
Based on the findings, this study concluded that the null hypothesis stating “There is no significant difference
in the effect of light and dark reactions on growth performance of mung beans is successfully rejected. According
to the data collected the researcher found that there is a significant difference between light and dark in the growth
performance of mung beans in terms of their color and root height. In terms of height, plants in the dark grow
faster than plants in the light , but dark plant growth is unhealthy compared to plant growth in the light.

Recommendation
The following recommendation are hereby presented:

1. Mung beans do not contain all the nutrition a person needs. But, they are good to eat because it is rich in
vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Also, its is benefgicial to those who have diabetes, cancer, heat stroke, promote
weight loss and lower body cholesterol.
2. When planting, it needs to be done outdoor where it can be directed by the sunlight in order to grow and
produce its own food. Also, for everyone to have a healthy mung bean plant.
3. Mung beans should not be sprinkled in water every day, they should be sprinkled in water near the soil every
other day because excessive watering of plant roots growing in waterlogged soil may cause them to die because
they cannot absorb the oxygen needed to function normally. The dying roots decay and cannot supply the plants
with the nutrients and water they need.
