INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Eggshells are the hard, outer covering of an egg and are one of the cheapest and most

effective sources of calcium, along with lesser amounts of protein and other organic

compounds. Also, you can make your supplements at home using eggshells. However, in

general, eggshells can be beneficial to plants by using them as a fertilizer. Using eggshells is an

excellent way to reduce your kitchen ways.

According to Gardening 101 (2021), eggshells are organic fertilizers that have

microelements needed by plants to grow well. Also, it can help in developing resistance to

factors that could cause stress in plants. Therefore, people use eggshells as fertilizer. Aside

from its benefits, it can help the plants be healthier and alive. The use of eggshells as fertilizer is

more effective in vegetables, ornamentals, herbs and spices, and other shallow-rooted plants.

Most people think of eggshells as trash or material for arts and crafts, but you can also

use them to enrich your soil. Calcium from eggshells neutralizes acid in the soil, helping to make

it more suitable for planting. Eggshells may be simple, but they are useful for other things,

especially plants and keeping them alive.

Background of the Study

Eggshells are great at recycling material such as recycling, but they can do so much in the

garden by using it as fertilizer. The use of eggshells as a fertilizer will help to keep the root

plants stable so that they grow faster and become stronger. In using eggshells as fertilizer, one

must know how to properly process and correctly place them on the plant to have satisfactory

results. Eggshells are the best to use as fertilizers.

Nowadays, people still do not know that eggshells can be used as fertilizer, and they still

think that eggshells are just trash and useless after using the inner part of them. However,

people who know that eggshells can be fertilized do not know how to use them properly and

how to compose them properly. Eggshells are healthy when it comes to plants, but people tend

to ignore the fact that eggshells can be beneficial by using them as fertilizers. As stated by

Southern Living (2022), there are benefits to using eggshells. This is beneficial for plant growth

because some plants prefer to grow in soil that has low acidity.

Most students at Silangan International High School do not know the impact of

eggshells. They just ignore the benefits and the advantages of using eggshells. Therefore, they

are not aware that eggshells as fertilizer can be beneficial and healthy.

In response to this situation, this research would help students to have knowledge and

understanding. The researchers know that eggshells will have a significant impact and benefit,

not only for students but for everyone. The benefits of eggshells as fertilizer are that they have

calcium that helps plants to grow faster and be stronger and more stable, and it has nutrients

such as micronutrients and micronutrients that are essential for plant growth.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the importance of our research titled “Effects of Eggshell Particle

Size and Eggshell Powder Solution on Labuyo Seed (Capsicum Frutescens) Germination

and Height Increase” for the School Year 2023-2024. More specifically, it aims to answer the

following questions.

1. What is the effect of the particle size of crushed eggshells (coarse and fine) on the growth of

labuyo seed in terms of:

a. Germination period

b. Height increase

2. What is the labuyo seed germination period and height increase using the eggshell powder

Solution?

3. How do the Germination period and height increase differ among the fine eggshells, coarse

eggshells, and the eggshell powder solution?

4. How does the form of the eggshell affect the germination period and height increase of

labuyo seed

Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (Ho)

There is no significant difference in the Germination period and Height Increase of the labuyo

seed Between the Eggshell Powder, Coarse Eggshell, And the Eggshell Powder solution.

Alternative Hypothesis (Hi)

There is a significant difference in the Germination period and Height Increase of the labuyo

seed Between the Eggshell Powder, Coarse Eggshell, And the Eggshell Powder solution.
Significance of the Study

The study seeks to see the effects of Powdered eggshell, coarse eggshell, and eggshell

powder solution on labuyo seed (capsicum frutescens), wherein researchers believed that the

following groups would benefit in a unique way from the study’s findings:

Students. The study will provide the students with some knowledge about eggshells.

Teachers. The provided details would aid the teachers in developing a deeper understanding of

the study.

Gardeners. This study will give them the idea that eggshells can be a fertilizer and it can be

beneficial to their plants.

Parents. This study serves as a guide for parents on how to improve the plants in their homes.

To future researchers. Our study will have great benefits and help future researchers who

will have similar studies to ours, because this will be their guide and source of information.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on exploring the eggshell forms on how they affect the germination

period and height growth of the labuyo seed (Capsicum Frutescens).

The study will be delimited to discuss the effect of the forms of eggshells (powdered,

coarse, and eggshell powder solution) on labuyo seed. The investigation is confined to the

chemical properties of eggshells and their potential as a fertilizer, excluding broader

considerations of alternative fertilizers. Furthermore, economic aspects will not be extensively

explored, as the primary emphasis is on the scientific evaluation of eggshells' efficacy as a

fertilizer rather than its economic feasibility. This delimitation ensures a well-defined and

manageable scope for the research.

Theoretical Framework

This Study aims to see the effect of eggshell particles (coarse and powdered) and

eggshell powder solution on labuyo seed germination and height increase, this study

encompasses the interplay between eggshell characteristics (particle size and solution

concentration) and their potential effects on nutrient availability, soil structure, and water

retention, all of which collectively influence mung bean germination and height increase

Eggshells - Eggshells are the product that the researchers experimented on to be better.

Labuyo seed – the plant that will be evaluated by the eggshells.

Nutrients - it is a chemical substance that will be found in using egg grain shells as an

alternative fertilizer.

Soil - Here in the soil will be placed or evaluated out the product that is expired by the research.

Calendar- it is the instrument that will be used to see the germination period of the mung beans

Tape measure- it is the instrument that will be used to see the height increase of the mung

beans

According to Master Class (2021), There are benefits of using eggshells as fertilizer.

Eggshells play a significant role in plants and vegetables by giving them nutrients. Eggshells are

made from crushed eggshells which contain high calcium that will strengthen the plants and

help them to grow immediately. Also, it contains minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, and

magnesium.
 Eggshells as fertilizer is an effective and inexpensive fertilizer that is perfect for outdoor

garden soil and houseplants. It is also good for people who want to save money to grow their

plants. People who will use eggshells as fertilizer will get great savings and benefits. Eggshells

are a wonderful way to get a healthy dose of fruit, vegetables, and protein in one go. They can

also be a convenient way for gardeners to have the easiest and most affordable fertilizers for

their plants. They can provide a variety of essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that

are important for overall health and well-being.

According to Alti Arnarson BSc, PhD. (2023), Eggshells are not only for crafts and waste

materials, but they can be fertilized. It can also reduce clutter in the kitchen because they are

not just thrown away but can also be turned into fertilizer. Making your smoothies at home is

also a wonderful way to reduce waste and save money. Eggshells can be beneficial to your

plants and can even be the cheapest and most effective source of calcium. Eggshells contain

40% calcium. Eggshells are not only one of the cheapest sources of calcium — they also are

among the most effective. Studies show that eggshell calcium is well absorbed and may

strengthen the bones of people with osteoporosis. They can also help you reach your daily

recommended servings of fruits and vegetables and can be a wonderful way to add more

variety to your plants.

According to Andrew Carberry, MPH (2023), studies show how to fertilize

your plants by using eggshells and how it can be beneficial in your plants as well as in your
garden. Eggs are delicious and nutritious. Most people throw away the shells, which is the best
part—for plants at least. Instead of throwing it away, it is better to make it fertilizer on the ground
to improve the soil in your garden. You can easily add minerals and nutrients to the soil by using
crushed eggshells or eggshell tea. You can also use eggshells as seed starters to ensure your
seedlings get off to a good start.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

An experimental Research Design would indeed be suitable for exploring the

effectiveness of the mother forms of the eggshells in the germination period and height increase

of the labuyo seed (Capsicum Frutescens). An experimental study allows you to carefully

control and manipulate variables to determine cause-and-effect relationships.

The Sample

We identify them by choosing the right place where we can conduct our experiment. We

chose labuyo seed plants as our variable in this study, we will need at least three groups to

conduct our experiment.

The Research Instrument

This research will be using a Controlled Observation to see any differences in the effect of the

forms of eggshells (powdered, coarse, and eggshell powder solution) on the labuyo seed.
Data Collection Procedure

For this research, the researcher used an experimental study, The researchers are

conducting an observation on the effect of eggshells based on their forms.

One plant has eggshell fertilizer while the other plant has normal fertilizer. The researcher will

observe the Germination Period and Height of the plant that has eggshell fertilizer The data

gathered will help the researcher capture good and reliable fertilizer for the plants
