WHAT IS MEDIA?

• When you hear the word “media”


what comes into your mind?
Most of the time,
we think of TV
and radio
reporters, why?
Media is defined as the physical objects used to
communicate with, or the mass communication through
physical objects such as radio, television, computers,
film, etc. . It also refers to any physical object used to
communicate messages.

In short, we think of TV and radio reporters because


they are the ones who give us information through TV
and radio programs. Media, therefore, is anything that
conveys a message.

Print media is defined as media consisting of paper and ink, reproduced in a
printing process that traditionally mechanical.

magazine?

Broadcast Media
Media such as radio and television that
reach target audiences using airwaves as the
transmission medium are considered as
broadcast media.

How are news and issues presented on TV


and radio? Are they presented the same as
they are presented on newspaper and
magazine?
New Media
New media content is organized and distributed on digital platforms or technologies such as
the internet . Digital means relating to the use of computer technology . New media also
means digital media that are interactive, which means they respond to user’s input. In his book
Understanding New Media, Robert Logan describe new media as very easily processed,
stored, transformed, retrieved, hyper-linked, and easily searched for and accessed.

Examples of new media include:


- Blog Digital games Social media Virtual reality
Media Convergence
Media convergence is the coexistence of traditional and new media. Converge means to
merge or join together, which means, media convergence happens when two or more media
sources join together. This allows the media content to be accessible or available across
various platform and devices.

For example, TV shows (broadcast media) are converted or changed into digital format
(new media) so they can be viewed even on smartphones through the internet.

How does media convergence help you as student?


WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MEDIA?
Advances in communication, largely through the internet, have improved community access
to information. Therefore the media play an important role in society as a source of
information, but also as a “watchdog” or scrutinizer.

Watchdog means a journalism is a form of investigative journalism where journalist, authors


or publisher fact-check and interview political and public figures to increase accountability in
democratic governance systems.
