Media Types and Convergence

MODULE 3
Lesson -1

Let’s Take A Look

A key part in being a media literate individual is having been to use or

select appropriate media. So what is Media? Maybe you’re thinking that it is
about the producers of media that you have heard from television and radio.
While others may think that it is a means of communication that uses a tool
for convenience. All of that are considered factual about media, but media have
varieties wherein one can broadcast, print, or the latest in which you can use
internet to select appropriate digital tools.
In this age, Media plays an extensive role in an individual’s daily life.
Right from the moment, you wake up until you sleep; you are exposed to
varieties of media. With the arrival of advanced technology, there has been a

you are aware of different media as it is significant in terms of choosing the
right technology for a study, research or a work that you need to perform.

 Print media is one of the oldest and basic forms of
communication. It includes newspapers, weeklies, magazines,
monthlies, banners & graphics, posters and other forms of printed
material.
 The contribution of print media in providing information and transfer
of knowledge is remarkable. Even after the advent of electronic media,
the print media has not lost its charm or relevance.
 Print media has the advantage of making a longer impact on the
minds of the reader, with more in-depth reporting and analysis.
 Magazines and newspapers are the dominant traditional print media
used in advertising. Brochures, flyers and other collateral pieces also
are sometimes referred to as print collateral. While digital media
expansion has affected use of print, it remains a viable way to
advertise.
 Primary strengths of print relative to digital include tangibility, an
enduring message and high credibility. Some people prefer to read
media in print as opposed to digital formats.

BROADCAST MEDIA
 Broadcast media covers a wide range of different communication
methods that include television, radio, podcast, blogs, advertising,
websites, online streaming and digital journalism.
 Broadcast media provides valuable information that can inform and
educate and includes public service announcements, daily news, weather
forecast, interviews, and documentaries.

MEDIA CONVERGENCE
• The co-existence of traditional and new media.
• The co-existence of print media, broadcast media (radio and television), the
Internet, mobile phones, as well as others, allowing media content to flow
across various platforms.
