What is a Turbocharger

1) A Turbocharger is a centrifugal compressor powered by a turbine that

is driven by an engine’s exhaust gases.
2) Its benefits lies with a compressor increasing the mass of air entering
the engine thereby resulting greater performance.
3) They are popularly used with internal combustion engines.
Why Turbochargers
not Superchargers
• The Turbocharger does not drain power
from the engine.
• By connecting a Turbocharger up to
40% to 50% of waste energy can be
utilized.
Turbine
• The exhaust from the cylinders
passes through the turbine
blades.
• There are two main turbine types
• 1. Axial
• 2. Radial
• Material used for turbine: Nickel
chrome alloys and
 molybdenumTitanium alloys
The Compressor
• Increases both pressure and density of air across its vanes.
• Centrifugal compressors are most commonly used in Turbochargers.
• Air is drawn in axially, accelerated to high velocity and then expelled in a
radial direction.

Material used for Compressor: High quality and strength aluminium alloy.
Shaft used between turbine and compressor
• It transmits the rotational motion and torque form turbine to the
compressor.
Material used for shaft: K18( Special type of stainless steel)
Housing

• Compressor housing is made up of cast aluminium alloy.

• Turbine housings are made up of ductile iron or nickel alloyed ductile iron.
Advantages of using Turbocharger:
•Compared to natural aspirated engine of identical power output, the fuel
consumption of Turbocharged engine is lower.
•High power and torque can be obtained at lower rpm.
•Space required for installation of Turbocharged engines are less compared
to that of naturally aspirated engines.
•No extra power supply is needed for operating the Turbocharger unit
because it utilize the waste energy of exhaust gases.

Disadvantages of Turbocharger:
•The biggest downside is turbolag which reduces the performance of the
engine.
Turbolag- If the engine is outfitted with only one large turbocharger, power
delivery from it can be delayed as the turbocharger takes time to spool up,
which is called turbo lag.
•Can’t be used in single cylinder engine.
Conclusion:

Turbochargers are an effective means of lowering an engine's specific fuel

consumption and increasing its power output to fuel-burned ratio. Historically,
they have been used only to improve a car's performance specifications, but
newer applications are being researched in environmental and cost-saving areas.
Because of the current worldwide oil crisis, automobile manufacturers are
beginning to research the fuel saving applications of the turbocharger.
