SAMPLE PROBLEM 1
A basketball was thrown with a speed of 8.4
m/s at an angle of 30o with the horizontal.
A. How high did it rise?
B. What is the farthest distance it will
reach?
Given:
v = 8.4 m/s
 = 30o
SOLUTION NO. 1
a. vy = v sin
= (8.4 m/s) (sin 30o)
= (8.4 m/s) (0.5)
= 4.2 m/s

vfy2 = viy2 + 2gd

(0 m/s)2 = (4.2 m/s)2 + 2(– 9.8 m/s2)dy
0 = 17.64 m2/s2 + (– 19.6 m/s2)dy
SOLUTION NO. 1 (CONT)

dy = 0.9 m

b) dy = viyt + gt2/2
0.9 m = (0 m/s)t + 9.8 m/s2(t)2/2
0.9 m = 0 + 4.9 m/s2(t2)
SOLUTION NO. 1 (CONT)

0.18 s2 = t2
0.42 s = t
SOLUTION NO. 1 (CONT)
T = 2t
= 2(0.42 s)
= 0.84 s

vx = v cos 
= (8.4 m/s) (cos 30o)
= (8.4 m/s) (0.8660)
= 7.27 m/s
SOLUTION NO. 1 (CONT)

dx = vx T
= (7.27 m/s)(0.84 s)
= 6.11 m
