INFECTION
definition

An infection is the invasion of an living tissues by disease-causing


agents, their multiplication, and the reaction of host tissues to
the infectious agents and their microbial products

Infectious disease = transmissible disease = communicable disease

• bacteria, viruses, viroids, prions, nematodes,
arthropodes, fungi and parasites
• they are not normally present within the body

an infection may cause no symptoms and be subclinical, or
it may cause symptoms and be clinically apparent
