Introduction
 Li-fi(light-fidelity) is wireless communication technology that uses light to transmit data.

 The technology works by using LEDs (light-emitting diodes) to modulate the light at extremely high speeds.

 However, li-fi bulbs are outfitted with a chip that modulates the light imperceptibly for optical data transmission.

 In li-fi data is transmitted by Led bulb and received by photoreceptors.

Working of li-fi
 The LEDs can be switched on and off very quickly which gives nice opportunity for data transfer in the form of
binary code.

 switching ON an LEDs is logical <1> and switching of an LEDs is logical <0>.

 Hence it is possible to encode the data into the LEDs by using a controller, we just have to vary at which LEDs
flicker depending on the data we want to encode to give different string of 0’s and 1’s

 Researchers in the laboratory have achieved data transfer rates of over 220 Gbps using Li-Fi technology.
Comparison between Li-Fi and Wi-Fi
1.Working operation

 Li-fi transmits data using light with the help of LED bulbs.

 Wi-fi transmits data using radio waves with the help of wi-fi router.

2.System Components

 Li-fi uses Lamp driver, LED bulb and photo detector.

 Wi-fi uses Wi-fi router and subscribing stations.

3.Causes of interference

 Li-fi system do not have any issues similar to that of radio frequency waves

 Wi-fi will have interference issues from nearby access points routers.
4.Technology used
 In Li-fi IrDA compliant are used.

 In wi-fi WLAN 802.11a/b/g/ac/ad standard compliant devices are used.

5.Privacy
 In Li-Fi light is blocked by walls and This makes it difficult for hackers to intercept the signal. hence will provide
more secure data transfer

 In wi-fi RF signal can not be blocked by the walls and hence need to employ other techniques to achieve secure data
transfer.

6.Speed
 Li-fi is much faster than wi-fi and it can transmit data of up to 224Gbps(laboratory data).

 whereas Wi-Fi can transmit data at speeds of up to 7 Gbps.

7.Frequency of operation
 Li-fi uses 10000 times frequency operation of the radio waves

 Wi-fi has 2.4GHz, 4.9GHz and 5GHz of frequency operation

8.Coverage distance
 Li-fi system has coverage of about 10 meters.

 Whereas in wi-fi 32 meter can be covered (WLAN 802.11b/11g) and it also vary based on transmit power and
antenna type.

9.Density of Data
 Li-fi can work in high dense environment.

 Wi-fi works in less dense environment due to interference related issue.

Limitations of Li-Fi

 Line of sight

 Interference from ambient light

 Limited coverage area

 Cost

 Limited device compatibility
