Introduction

What is Li-Fi ?
Light-Fidelity
LI-FI is transmission of data through Light Medium,
sending data through LED light bulb that varies intensity
faster than human eye can notice.
Present Scenario
 Currently so many devices operates on Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz
frequency, and uses of Wi-Fi increasing hence we
need another source i.e. Li-Fi.

History of Li-Fi

Prof. Harald Haas

University of Edinburgh,
Scotland.

Prof. Haralad Haas, a professor at the University of Edinburgh who began

his research in the field in 2004, gave a debut demonstration of what he
called a Li-Fi prototype at the TED Global Conference in Edinburgh in
2011. At TED Global, has demonstrated data rate of transmission of
around 10 Mbps. Two months later he achieved 123 Mbps.

Working Process
 Operational procedure is based on 1’s and 0s. The
switching rate of LEDs is very fast and efficient, which
gives nice opportunities for transmitting data. We have
to just vary the rate at which the LED’s .
 Thus every light source will works as a hub for data
transmission.
 On hub side the data from the internet will be streamed
to a lamp driver. The microchip converts the digital data
into light .
 A light sensitive device (photo detector) receives the
signal in the form of flickering light and converts it back
into original data.

Application on Li-Fi

TRAFFIC LIGHTS
• Traffic lights and cars can
communicate to the each
other. Cars have LED-based
headlights, LED-based back
lights, and cars can
communicate with each
other and prevent
accidents in by exchanging
information.
Application of Li-Fi
Intrinsically Safe Environment: Visible Light is
more safe than RF, hence it can be used in places where
RF can't be used such as petrochemical plants .
Application of Li-Fi
Hospitals (In Few Medical Equipment’s)
Application of Li-Fi
Aircraft: The whole airways communication are
performed on the basis of radio waves. To overcome this
drawback , li-fi is introduced.
Application of Li-Fi

Under Ocean: Li-Fi can even wok underwater

were Wi-Fi fails completely, thereby throwing open
endless opportunities for military / navigation operations.
Application on Li-Fi
Street Lamps (as free Access Points): There are
millions of street lamps deployed around the world. Each of these
street lamps could be a free access point.
Limitations or Challenges
 Light can't pass through objects.

 Interferences from external light sources.

 High installation cost of the VLC systems.

 A major challenge facing Li-Fi is how the receiving device

will transmit back to transmitter(we have attach hub to our
device).
Conclusion
If this technology can be put into practical use , every
bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspots to
transmit wireless data. Light sources are everywhere and
hence Data sources will be.
