WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) vs. LiFi (Light Fidelity)
The terms WiFi and LiFi possess similarities (both are wireless
methods of data transmission) but are fundamentally different
and have numerous differences wrt various properties .
► Operation
WiFi: WiFi transmits data using radio waves with the help of WiFi
router
LiFi: LiFi transmits data using light sources (presently LED bulbs)
► Frequency of operation
WiFi: 2.4 GHz ,4.9 GHz ,5 GHz
LiFi: 10,000 times frequency spectrum of radio
Coverage distance:
WiFi: About 32 meters (WLAN 802.11b/11g), varies based on
transmit power and antenna type
LiFi: About 10 meters
► Data Transfer Speed
WiFi: Data transfer speed is on an average 150 Mbps
LiFi: Faster data transfer speed ranging from 1-10 gbps
► Cost
WiFi: WiFi is expensive as related to LiFi because it uses radio
spectrum
LiFi: Cheaper than WiFi because free band doesn’t need license
& it uses light
Applications of LiFi Technology
– ADVANTAGES OF LI-FI
– Li-Fi can solve problems related to the insufficiency,
this technology uses Visible light spectrum that has
still not been greatly utilized.
– For a specific area as the users of Wifi increases its
bandwidth decreases for user where as in Lifi there
is no loss in bandwidth with the increase in number
of users
– As lifi technology uses light hence it is harmless as
compaired to wifi technology which uses Radio
waves which can harm humans as well as other
living beings
– Can be used anywhere, even in RF restricted areas;
since light waves will not interfere with radio waves
• Light can't pass through objects.
• A major challenge facing Li-Fi is how
the receiving device(photoreceptors)
will transmit back to transmitter.
• High installation cost of the VLC
systems.
• Interferences from external light
sources like sun, light, normal bulbs,
opaque materials.
• Internet cannot be used without a
light source. This could limit the
locations and situations in which Li-Fi
could be used.
▶Thus, if Li-Fi technology can be put
into practical use, every bulb can
be used as an alternative to Wi-Fi
hotspots. It provides simple, faster
and efficient wireless data
communication. Li-Fi will make us
to proceed towards the cleaner,
greener, safer and brighter future.
