Advantages of Lesson
Planning
 It keeps the teacher to be systematic and orderly in the treatment of the subject
matter

 The teacher sets forth with some definite aims in view and is conscious of the
interests, atittudes, etc. that he is to develop in the students through certain
activities and some other means.
 Planning a lesson gives confidence and self-reliance to the teachers
which is of great value for successful teaching.

 Stimulate student interest because most students seem to dislike the

idea of sitting through a boring lecture irrespective of the subject.
But your lesson plan can be an excellent value-add to your lectures
that has the potential to make your students eagerly await your next
learning session. A good lesson plan might contain a few attractive
illustrations that can make a topic seem easier for most students.
A. What is a lesson plan?

Planning of classroom lessons is essential for

successful teaching. It is a classroom guide for
the teacher as a visualization of the classroom
experiences he/she desires to occur.

The Dictionary of Education defines a lesson plan as

a teaching outline of the important pointa of a lesson
arranged on the in which they are to be presented; it
may include objectives, points to be made, questions
to be asked, references to materials, assignments, etc.

B. Pre-requisites of lesson planning

Effective lesson planning depends upon various factors. The

knowledge of physiological development and the intellectual
maturity of the learners is essential before making a lesson plan for
the class.

Similarly, a knowledge of the needs , interests, and abilities of the

group helps to make the lesson plan suitable for the group .
Moreover, the knowledge of the psychology of learning, principles of
teaching, previous knowledge of the learners, and effective mastery
of the subject matters.
C. Values of lesson planning

• Lesson planning is a device essential to economize time

and to make the teaching systematic.

• It enables the teacher to aim at objectives appropriate to

the lesson and suitable for the class and thus guides in
the attainment of those objectives.

• A lesson plan enables the teacher to cover a wider field

in a limited time
D. Preparing a lesson plan

A lesson should be planned immediately after the preceding lesson,

because the events of the previous lessons are fresh in the mind of the
teacher.
The extent of content covered and approach followed is distinct in his
mind. He will also forsee the type of activity that will create interest and
enthusiasm on the learners. A lesson plan usually includes;

3. Preparation (Introduction and Motivation): Before giving the lesson, the

teacher needs to know the learner’s previous knowledge. This is to know the
background of the class and thus to prepare ground for developing the present
lesson. Through proper questioning, the teacher should test the previous
knowledge and then introduce the lesson linking it with their previous
knowledge.

This can be done by:

- Testing the previous knowledge of the learners and introducing the lesson with
an explanation.

- Asking questions that may reveal their ignorance, arouse interest and curiosity
to learn the new matter.

- Through the of chart, maps or pictures.

- Through skillful conversation.

4. Presentation: This is the stage of 5. Application: In this stage, application of the new
actual giving of the lesson, the time for learning to the life situations discussed. The pupils
the teacher to show his ability in should be able to see the application of principles of
selecting appropriate activities such as the phenomena in their everyday life and also be
demonstrating, talking, questioning, familiar with their applications. They should be able
