Order picking
system (Amazon)
Order picking
order picking is the process where individual items are picked from a
fulfillment facility according to customers orders.
Picking types
• Paper picking :

The simplest picking method, It is

carried out using picking lists and does
not require any technical support.

The information recorded on the lists

then usually transferred manually to a
computer system.

The paper picklist process has been

replaced by electronic systems.
• RF (Radio frequency) picking:

Hand-held device with its display and scanner, this

device identify the storage location on the screen and
gives you the item number, the operator goes to the item
requires picking , and scanned the product, the order
status in the host is updated.

• Voice directed picking:

Voice computer system is integrated with warehouse

system management

How does it work? By wearing a headset, the voice

telling the operator the exact product and volume to pick.
scan occurs at multiple points during the pick to validate
the match between the pick and the order
• Smart glasses for picking:

The software show which aisle, which shelf, and which

pins to pick from, also show the information of the
order.
the picker goes to the desired location, and the glasses
verifies that the picker is at the right place by scan
barcode, after packing the product, the software will
guide the picker to the next picking location.

with this system its very easy to send messages and

updates to the picker, the message show up on screen
as a notification.
By 2023, Amazon will have at least
have an average 355 centers around the U.S
800,000 square feet
of storage space.

has an inventory of about 12

million items across all its
categories.
The new logistical model
“Shelf to The People”
Using “kiva system”
amazon have fulfillment centers that are large as 1.25
million square feet and over than million product.
to deal with that scale amazon has built its own robotic
system by acquisition the kiva system ,and improved it to
suit their usage
The Amazon robotics system
The Robotic Mobile Fulfillment System is a part-to-picker
system using movable shelves to store items and using
robots to ship the shelves to the picking stations.

steps of a robotic picking task:

a. Driving from the robot’s current location to the

storage location of target shelf .
b. Carrying the shelf from storage location to the
picking station.
c. Letting the worker pick products from the shelf.
d. Bringing the shelf back to the storage location.

Picking method at
Batch picking
is an order picking method in which pickers
simultaneously collect items for multiple orders.

To start the batch picking process, the robot bring the pods to the
pickers, the information shows up on the screen including a picture
of the item, how many of it, and which slot.
then the worker pick the item from the shelf and put it in the
container, each container have a multiple items ordered by several
different customer, which means that each order picked up by
several different pickers, and this is what batch picking look like.
