Keeping Score

Regina and Ryan were asked to

document the basketball games
scores during the intramurals. They
were assigned to track the point
differentials of each team. Each
team’s point differential is the
difference between the number of
points they scored and the number
of points their opponents scored
against them.

Let’s Explore

Integers

Integers refer to the set of counting

numbers and their opposites (or negatives)
including zero. They can be best visualized
on the number line.

games. Find the point
differentials of each team. Each
team’s point differential is the
difference between the number
of points they scored and the
number of points their
opponents scored against them.

Let’s Explore

We can use integers to represent other situations.

We usually denote what is good, above or to the
right as positive and those that are bad, below or
to the left as negative. For example,

deposit of PhP 1 500 + 1 500
withdrawal of PhP 850 - 850

Summary

1
Integers are whole counting numbers and their
opposites, including zero. The counting numbers we
know are the positive integers. Zero is neither
positive nor negative. Positive integers are usually
used to show what is good, above or to the right.
Negative integers are their opposites.
Fun Fact

The word integer came from

the Latin word integer which
means “untouched” – from in-
“not” and the root word of
tangere “to touch”. The word
was used as an adjective that
meant “whole” or “entire”.
