Perform the indicated operations.

1) 2 x 5 x 15 = 150 4) 7 x 3 x 4 x 2 = 168

2) 100 ÷ 2 ÷ 5 = 10 5) 1000 ÷ 20 ÷ 5 = 10

3) 58 – 16 + 14 = 56

Let’s Explore

GEMDAS
When you have to do multiple operations,
you should follow the order GEMDAS. The
letters GEMDAS stand for Grouping,
Exponents, Multiplication, Division,
Addition, and Subtraction.
Let’s Explore
Grouping: The first operation/s that you will

G have to evaluate is/are the ones that are

grouped together, usually enclosed in
parentheses ( ), brackets [ ], and braces { }.

Exponent: Then, simplify the terms with

E exponents. If there are terms with
exponents within grouping symbols, then
simplify them first.
Let’s Explore
Multiplication or Division:
Next, do multiplication OR
division, whichever comes first
MD when you go from left to right.
If you go from left to right and
division comes first, perform
division first. If multiplication
comes first, then multiply first.
Let’s Explore

Addition or Subtraction:
Finally, go from left to right
and check whether addition or
AS subtraction comes first. If
subtraction comes first, then
subtract first. If addition
comes first, then add first.
Let’s Explore
Find the value of N if:
N=()-()
First, simplify the terms with exponents within the
groupings.
N = () - ( )
Next, do the operation inside the parentheses.

N= -()
Let’s Explore
Divide first before multiplying.
N= -()
Subtract first before adding.
N= -()
Add.
N= -
Subtract.
N =
Let’s Explore
Find the value of N if:
N=
First, do the operation inside the parentheses.
N=
Next, simplify the terms with exponents within the
groupings.

N=
Let’s Explore

N=
Subtract.

N =

Therefore, the answer is 17.

Fun Fact

Previously, the rule for order of

operations was more known as
PEMDAS (Please Excuse My Dear
Aunt Sally). However, it was
eventually changed to GEMDAS to
be more accurate, as not all
grouping symbols are parentheses.
