relationships. It has been observed that more and more people are finding it difficult to
commit themselves to relationships, and this was partly blamed on technology and the fast-
paced life that people live today.

Understanding
Literature
A fictional work with a fish-out-of-water theme places the character in a
completely strange or unfamiliar situation, just like the literal fish that is not in its
usual aquatic environment. The story is built on whether or not the character adjusts
to the strange environment or continues to behave as he or she would and cause
change to the environment itself or influence the other characters in the process.

e.g. Planet of the Apes, John Carter, Harry Potter, Three Kisses

Chronological Pattern of Organization
The chronological pattern is one of the commonly used patterns of
organization by writers because it follows the time sequence in which events occur. In
this manner, the story may move forward (starting with the least recent to the most
recent) or backward.
Some writers, however, o not intentionally tell events as they occur in the story.
Some use flashbacks to introduce things that occurred in the past as a way to add
depth to the story or provide background information that may explain the character’s
motives, actions, and traits in the present time.
Activity
A. Rearrange the important events in “Three Kisses” in a chronological order by
completing the timeline below with essential words and phrases corresponding to
those events.

B. Reflect on the way the author organized the story. Why is the sequencing
important? Would the story be more effectively written if the events were
arranged chronologically? Justify your answer.

used intentionally by skilled writers to strategically emphasize an idea even if it is not expressed
as a complete sentence (event in works of fiction).
