What Is Simple Present Tense?
• Simple = sederhana
• Present = Saat ini/Sekarang
• Simple present – bentuk sederhana untuk keterangan waktu saat ini.

• We use simple present tense to tell an action, that is


happens in the present time or when it happens
regularly (or unceasingly, which is why it’s sometimes
called ‘present indefinite’).

• Verbal sentence • Nominal sentence
• SUBJECT + V1 / V (s/es) • SUBJECT + BE + ANA

 Gawa works every day.  I am handsome.


 Ida loves to study.  She is at my home.
 We learn English from Monday –  We are good team.

Simple Present Tense - Verbal
Wh-Questions:
What, When, Who, Where, Why, How
 When do you want to meet me?
 Why does Beth always complain?
 How does she make it?
 Where do you go on vacation?

 But, questions that ask about the Subject often don’t use do/does:

 Who calls you?


 What makes you happy?

Verb s / es / ies :
 In third person singular the verb always ends in –s
(he wants, she needs, he gives, she thinks, etc)

 Verbs ending in –y : the verb changes the –y to –ies:


(fly – flies, cry – cries, try – tries)
Exception : If there is a vowel before the –y:
(play – plays, pray – prays)

 Add –es to verbs ending in: -ss, -x, -sh, -ch, and –o
(he passes, she catches, he fixes, it pushes, the sound echoes).

Hank is a cowboy. He live on a farm. He have a horse named Ginger. Hank loves Ginger.
He rides Ginger every day. Sometimes they walks slowly, and sometimes they are run
fast. They always has a good time.

Ginger are Hank's horse. She is light brown. His tail and mane are dark brown. She is
three years old. She live in the stable by the house.

Ginger wait for Hank every morning. She enjoys their time together. Often, Hank gives
her a apples. After long rides, Hank always wash and brush Ginger. He usually brushes
her tail. Then he gives his food and fresh water. Ginger loves Hank.

Bersama dengan 2 anak mereka, Sam dan Lana. Robert sangat mencintai keluarganya.

Robert bekerja sebagai petugas polisi di Atlanta. Dia suka pekerjaannya. Dia adalah petugas polisi yang

baik. Robert menjadi petugas polisi karena dia suka menolong orang. Robert melindungi masyarakat

Atlanta. Dia memecahkan (kasus) kejahatan dan menangkap para penjahat. Dia menjaga para

masyarakat tetap aman.

Kadang-kadang, dia mengunjungi sekolah-sekolah. Dia berbicara kepada para murid. Para murid suka

Robert. Petugas Robert Hughes adalah pahlawan di Atlanta.


Simple Present Tense (story)
Robert Hughes lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He lives with his wife, Patricia. They live with
their two children, Sam and Lana. Robert loves his family.

Robert works as a police officer in Atlanta. He likes his job. He is a good police officer.
Robert is a police officer because he likes to help people.
Robert protects the citizens of Atlanta. He solves crimes and catches criminals. He
keeps the citizens safe.

Sometimes he visits the schools. He talks to students. The students like Robert. Officer
Robert Hughes is a hero in Atlanta.
What are some of the functions?
 Untuk mengatakan kegiatan yang terjadi dalam temporary time (frekuensi) atau habitual
(kebiasaan)
• Examples :
• I always come on time.
• She sends money for her parents every month.

 Untuk menyatakan factual (kebenaran umum yang tak terbantahkan)


• Examples :
• The sun rises from the east and sets in the west.
• Water boils at 100 degree celcius.

 Untuk membuat simple statement yang berlaku general (berlaku kapan saja) maupun tidak
general (verb be)
• I live in Bali
• She is so beautiful
• He is angry.
What are some of the functions?
 Simple present menggunakan stative verb untuk menyatakan perasaan (feeling), indera (sense),
pikiran (mental state), atau kepemilikan (possession)
• Examples :
• She loves you.
• I see tears in your eyes.
• We agree with her opinion.
• My brother owns a new house.

 Untuk memberikan induksi atau aksi.


• Examples :
• You add a glass of coconut milk into a pan and then boil it.
• You go straight ahead then turn left.
