Robert M. Gagne
INTRODUCTION
Robert M. Gagne is a prominent educational
psychologist whose ideas on the ‘Conditions
of Learning’ are generally employed in every
teaching learning process.

GAGNE(1984)
Has described learning as a
change in the behavior of an
individual that is retained and
that, makes possible a
corresponding change in his or
her behavior in a particular
situation . 7/1/20XX Pitch deck title 3

EIGHT STAGES OF LEARNING

7/1/20XX Pitch deck 4title
1. SIGNAL LEARNING (STIMULUS)
This is the simplest form of learning and consists
essentially of the classical conditioning first
described by the behavioral psychologist Pavlov.
In this type of learning the animal or individual
acquires a conditioned response to a given signal.

Example: When there is a Red

Signal on Road, people stop their
vehicles.
7/1/20XX Pitch deck title 5
Here ,

Stimulus = Red light

Conditioned response=People stopped their vehicles

This learning is also known as Type-S theory

2. STIMULUS - RESPONSE LEARNING
This is also known as operant conditioning which
was developed by Skinner.
Skinner considers an operant as a set of acts which
constitutes an organism’s doing something .
Example : Raising its head, walking about, pushing
a lever.

Stimulus-response learning is all about is getting
the response to stimuli.
2.
TheSTIMULUS - RESPONSE
individual makes responsesLEARNING
to specific
stimuli; the correct response is rewarded

3. CHAINING (PROCESS)
This is a more advanced form of learning in which
the subjects develops the ability to connect two or
More previously learned stimulus-response bonds
into a linked sequence.

7/1/20XX Pitch deck title 9

It is the process whereby most complex
psychomotor skills are learned.
Eg. Riding a bicycle or playing the piano.

7/1/20XX Pitch deck title 10

4. VERBAL ASSOCIATION(TERMINOLOGY)
Chains that are verbal, e.g. A child identifies an
object and calls it by its proper name “the red ball”
or it finds a Hindi or French equivalent for an
English word.

7/1/20XX Pitch deck title 11

Verbal association occurs when the learner makes
verbal responses to stimuli that are words or pair of
words. Chaining is a process where a learner
connects individual associations in sequence.
Example: A learner can recite verbal sequences
consisting of lists of words, or the alphabet from
A-Z .
