revolutionary
new approach to

CHARACTERISTICS OF CUBISM

 Four important characteristics of

Cubism are the application of
multiple perspectives, the use of
geometric shapes, a
monochromatic color palette, and
a flattened picture plane.
HISTORY OF CUBISM

The term Cubism was first used by

French critic Louis Vauxcelles in 1908 to
describe Braque's landscape paintings.
Painter Henri Matisse had previously
described them to Vauxcelles as looking
comprised of cubes. The term wasn't
widely used until the press adopted it to
describe the style in 1911
This movement was created by
Picasso and Braque in Paris from 1907
to 1914 ◦ Braque and Picasso were the
major artists throughout the majority
of the Cubist movement ◦ The term
Cubism was first coined by Louis
Vauxcelles after seeing the landscapes
Braque painted at L’Estaque, in 1908,
calling the geometric figures in the
paintings “cubes.”
TWO STAGES OF CUBISM

Analytical- Very abstract; mostly made up of

overlapping planes and geometrical figures

Synthetic- tended to use new mediums, such

as clips from newspaper, on top of paint
canvass; took away all three dimensional
aspects left from Analytical
ANALITYCAL

few figures (simple
subjects) ◦ Noticeable
lack of color ◦ Earth

tones with neutral
associations
SYNTHETIC

◦ Collage created ◦
Different materials
than just canvas ◦
Referred to as blunt
and straightforward ◦
Considered “easy to
read”

THE artist of the 20th

called a synthetic phase of
