What are Cuisenaire
rods?
Cuisenaire rods are not just colourful sticks for fun. They are
effective aid to learn mathematics in enjoyable way. They have
got different colours and length. Each colour correlates with
certain length. The numbers which are divide on two correlate to
red ; the numbers which are divide on three belong to blue; the
numbers which are divide on five belong to yellow. These rods
also help to understand sensor standards such as: long-short,
more-less, similar – different, high-low, wide- narrow. According
this method your work is divide on three parts: acquaintance,
work on schemes; learning the numbers and quantitative
composition.

How does this
method work?
Bruno met his friends and they played all afternoon in the garden. The
shop on the corner sells lollipops for 3 francs and chocolates for 4 francs.
Bruno would like to buy some with the 28 francs he received from his
mother. What can he buy? (…)

The children realize that there are several possibilities and try to find as
many solutions as possible by forming a 28 carpet with the v and R rods
[which represent, respectively, the numbers 3 and 4.
Looking at their carpets, the children discover that Bruno can buy:

7 chocolates (they write: 7 × 4 = 28)
or: 4 lollipops and 4 chocolates (they write: 4 × 3 + 4 × 4 = 28)
or else: 8 lollipops and 1 chocolate (they write: 8 × 3 + 1 × 4 = 28). Sample Footer Text 8
What did another teachers review
about Cuisenaire rods?

They reported favorable results, both in terms of children’s interest,

. self-confidence and motivation, and on account of the insights in
arithmetic they had gained.
While some benefits were available for slower pupils, the average and
brighter pupils seemed to benefit particularly by the teachers’ use of the
approach.
One of the great discoveries in the history of mathematics education

Another interesting facts
about Georges Cuisenaire!
Cuisenaire graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music at Mons, where he was awarded first prize
for  violin.
.The "Cuisenaire Rod" method revolutionised the teaching of mathematics by being recognised by
pedagogues and psychologists the world over as an instrument of exceptional efficacity. His method was
adopted by thousands of teachers in over sixty countries.

Cuisenaire was made an officer of the Leopold 11 January 1968. In 1973 UNESCO recommended the use
of Cuisenaire learning aids and suggested the reform of mathematics education programmes based on his
method. Sample Footer Text 10
