Introduction:

 Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys

that are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviours and
roles associated with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as
relationships with each other.

 In sociological terms, society refers to a group of people who live in a

definable community and share the same cultural components. On a
broader scale, society consists of the people and institutions around
us, our shared beliefs, and our cultural ideas. Typically, many societies
also share a political authority.
What do we mean by Sex and gender?
 Sex is usually categorized as female or male but there is variation in the
biological attributes that comprise sex and how those attributes are
expressed.

 Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are
socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviours and roles associated
with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as relationships with each
other. As a social construct, gender varies from society to society and can
change over time
Changing gender roles in society
Gender roles have often been defined by a separation of men into public
spheres, such as business and leadership, and women into private spheres,
such as homemaking and motherhood.

 For example, girls and women are generally expected to dress in typically
feminine ways and be polite, accommodating, and nurturing. Men are
generally expected to be strong, aggressive, and bold. Every society, ethnic
group, and culture has gender role expectations, but they can be very
different from group to group.

“WHAT IT’S LIKE WHEN SHE

EARNS MORE ?”
"Are we really facing inequality in our modern society ?”

GENDER INEQUALITY :

 Gender inequality has been prevalent in all societies for centuries and
continues to exist even today.

 An example of gender prejudice is female foeticide The widespread

practice of aborting female foeticide happens every day: the reality of
gender inequality in India, origin of gender inequality and how to
deactivate it.

 One of the most evil forms of discrimination faced by a girl after

marriage is the practice of dowry.
Gender Equality :

 The process of being fair to women and men.

 Requires equal enjoyment by women and men of socially valued-

goods, opportunities, resources and rewards.

 It doesn't mean men and women being the same.

Why Gender Equality is Important?

 Society that values women and men as equal are safer and healthier

 Gender equality is a human right

 It’s important for economic prosperity

 Gender Equality prevents violence against women and girls

How does Gender play a role in poverty?
 There is clearly a tradeoff between gender inequality in household work
and women's economic viability

 Across nations, the correlation is clear: in countries where women do

more of the housework, they are less likely to work; their countries'
GDP per capita (PPP) suffers, as do their families' livelihoods.

 For example, In India, among the 30 per cent people who are below the
poverty line, 70 per cent are women, leading to economic dependence
on men that becomes a root cause of gender disparity. Illiteracy follows
closely in contributing to this inequality. There are around 960 million
illiterate adults, of whom two-thirds are women.
Gender Discrimination :
 What Is Gender Discrimination?

Gender discrimination is when someone is treated unequally or

disadvantageously based on their gender but not necessarily in a sexual
nature. This includes harassment/discrimination based on sex, gender
identity, or gender expression.

 Gender Discrimination Commonly found:

a. Education
b. Work
c. Income
d. Cultural
Causes of Gender Discrimination:
 Men dominating mentality
 Various social and religious
 Lack of stong protest by women
 Familuals
 Work place discrimination
How can we Stop Gender Discrimination?

 Gender Inequality can be reduced by giving equal opportunities

 Increasing women employment

 Social welfare developments by politician

 Implement gender neutral recruitment processes

 Have a clear policy on Discrimination

Conclusion:

Gender is of key importance in defining the power, privilege and

possibilities that some people have and some people do not have in a given
society. It affects progress towards equality and freedom from
discrimination.
