ATTRIBUTE DEPENDENCY
The Function Follows Form (FFF) Process

Instead of looking for a need, or an obvious solution to a need, we manipulate the status
quo and systematically screen for hidden benefits.

The Five Patterns of Innovation
What does it work?
It’s no rocket science, it’s simply a systematic approach.

Attribute Dependency

Attribute
Dependency

The creation/removal or
symmetries or dependencies
between existing product
properties (e.g. color
changes with temperature,
etc.).

Examples:
CK One (Different gender,
same perfume)

Cornering headlights on a
car (Direction of headlight
depends on steering)
Attribute Dependency

Attribute • List all the internal components

Dependency 1

The creation/removal or
symmetries or dependencies 3
between existing product
properties (e.g. color
changes with temperature, • Visualize of the resulting virtual system
etc.). 4
Examples:
CK One (Different gender, • Benefits, Possible markets and opportunities
same perfume) 5
Cornering headlights on a
car (Direction of headlight • Challenges for Feasibility & Adaptation
depends on steering) 6

• Don’t just take out troublesome components (That’s fine-tuning)

• Ex. : taking sugar out of soda, caffeine out of coffee
• Try taking out the essential component

• Avoid immediately replacing the subtracted component

• Don’t succumb to cognitive dissonance;

• Avoid simple unbundling
