Pump.
• What is a pump?
• A pump is defined as a mechanical device that rotates or
reciprocates to move fluid from one place to another.
• The operating principle of the pump is to convert
mechanical energy to pressure.

1
Why we use pump?
• Water does not flow uphill.
• Used to lift water from a lower elevation to a higher
elevation.
• Pumps are also used to tansfer fluids fastly.
• They can also transfer highly toxic fluids.
• To produce required flow rate.

2
Applications.
• Irrigation.
• Gasoline supply.
• Municipal water works,
• Drainage system.
• Hydraulic control system.
• Chemical industries.
• Fire brigade.

3
Type of pumps.
• Positive Displacement. • Dynamic.
1. Rotary 1. Centrifugal.
• Simple rotor. 2. Axial.
• Multiple rotor.
2. Reciprocating
• Diaphram
• Piston, plunger.

4
Centrifugal Pump.
 Principle
• It works on the principle of forced vortex flow means when
a certain mass of fluid is rotated by external torque rise in
pressure head takes place.
• Conversion of energy occurs by virtue of two main parts
of pump. (Impeller) (casing)
• Impeller converts driver energy into kinetic energy and
diffuser converts the kinetic energy into pressure energy.

Construction.
• Sump.
• Strainer.
• Foot valve.
• Vanes.
• Impeller.
• Suction pipe.
• Delivery pipe.
• Casing.
• Delivery valve. 1
Centrifugal Pump.
• Advantages. • Disadvantages
1. Energy efficiency. 1. Low suction power.
2. smooth flow. 2. Cant transfer high
viscous liquids.
3. Low maintenance.
3. Requires priming.
4. Size versatility.
5. Can handle liquids
containing solids.

1
Reciprocating Pump.
• Reciprocating pumps are positive displacement pumps,
initially a small quantity of liquid is taken into the chamber
and is physically displaced and forced out with pressure.
• Piston is used to suck the liquid into the chamber and
then push it out of chamber with pressure.

Reciprocating Pump.

ReciprocatingPump.
• Advantages, • Disadvantages.
1. High pressure is acheived 1. Low speed
at the outlet. 2. Flow is not uniform.
3. High initial cost.
2. Priming is not needed. 4. More noise.
3. Can handle high viscous
liquids.
