Creating a Safe
Workplace
This is a legal obligation for all organizations the
occupational health and safety act and labour laws
are all very clear on the requirements for safety for
employees.

This is looked at the three dimensions


1. Legally guaranteed safe work environment for
workers,
2. Employers must protect workers and
3. The hazards must be known
Definition of Work place Safety
It is a corporate field related to safety health and welfare of people at
work
It narrates the strategies and methods in place to ensure a healthy safe
environment of employees within the work place

It includes rules, regulations which are designed on the basis of the


existing Government policies which every organization puts in place
for it people.
(you are all aware of incidences that have happened at your various
workstations for example; injuries from machines, head injuries from
falling down without wearing protective helmets)

Importance of Safety Training
To educate employees with view of making them aware about and updating

them with the latest safety measures in order to avoid injuries and loss of

assets

Importance of work place safety


A lot of health problems are experienced everyday emerging from various

sources

For a good Social mental and physical wellbeing of the employees at

workplace be it professionals or not.

To be able to execute successful policies or programms or training which give

a safe and healthy work environment

Roles and duties for employers
 To inform employees possible Hazards and how to respond
to them
 To record illnesses and injuries
 Report any incidences
 Have safety planning which are in four dimensions
1. Identify and assess the circumstances
2. Involvement for both employers and employees
3. Maintenance
4. Training employees on safety and hold occasional safety
drills
HOW is this achieved?
 They must have knowledge and skills
 Re-enforcement of employers, managers and supervisors with
their responsibility in the OSHA Act and other prescribed roles.
 Train employers on procedures for responding to workers
reports of injuries incidences
 Caution to prevent discouraging and malicious reporting
 Train them in recognizing hazards and controlling them
 Investigation techniques including root cause analysis

Specific roles of employees on safety


 To report injuries, illnesses
 A reporting computerized must have employees basic
computer skills and access to computers for effective
reporting
 Workers should be given specific roles within a safety health
program
 Workers must participate in incident investigations

 Workers should have an understanding of the hazards and recognize and be
able to control by actively involving them in the process to eliminate hazards
before they occur

i. Train (workers should know the techniques of identifying the hazards
ii. Instruct them. (Instruct workers on the concepts of controlling, including a
hierarchy of control of administration
iii. Workers should know when and how to wear required personal protective
equipments
iv. Always provide additional training which change of equipment and facility
v. Train new workers for an new assigned tasks.
Case study 1
Rona enjoys working on the assembly line. However, she seems to
repeatedly forget the instructions you have given her about safe
lifting practices.
What are some techniques you would use to help Rona work more safely?
Safety clothing and equipment
Like all employees, supported employees must use safety clothing and
equipment (PPE).
As support staff, your role is to assist supported employees to use safety
clothing and PPE.

How can you do this?


Case study 2
Daniel is required to wear ear-plugs when he works near loud machinery. He is

very good at inserting the ear-plugs correctly, but you have noticed that he

sometimes arrives at work wearing his ear-plugs. You suspect he is not removing

them when he finishes work.

How would you address this issue?


Misusing equipment

Like all employees, supported employees must not interfere with or misuse

equipment.

As support staff, your role is to assist supported employees not to interfere with or

misuse equipment.
