Overview
This lesson was focused on understanding Action
Research concepts, processes and models. It
provides the questions and answers that everyone
needs to know, like why action research is useful to
Teacher Researcher? What type of classroom action
studies that can engage in? And present the core
characteristics of action research. It will show the
models and guide in conducting action research.
These models include the McNiff & Whitehead
2006 model, Nelson 2014 model and Department of
Education (D.O 16) 2017 model. And it will also
show the Action Research Cycle.
At the end of this lesson, Students
must be able to:

• Use concepts and processes

of action research.

• Identify sample models of

AR such as of DepEd,
2017; McNiff &
Whitehead, 2006; and
Nelson, 2014.
LET`S CHECK YOUR

KNOWLEDGE!
1. It is used to address practical problems in the classroom

2. Identify the problem

3. Continues all through out the process

4. It is an action research strategy

5. It takes an action
What is
Action
Research?
Action Research is a form of self-
reflective inquiry that can be
utilized by teachers in order to
improve the rationality and justice
of (1) their own practices, (2) their
understanding of these practices
and (3) the situations in which these
practices are carried out. (Carr and
Kemmis, 2012)
Action research is “a
comparative research on the
conditions and effects of
various forms of social
action and research leading
to social action (Lewin,
Kurt, 2012)
Action Research is a type of inquiry
that is:
• Practical as it evolves making changes
to practice.
• Theoretical as it is informed by theory
and can generate new insights.
• Concerned with change and
improvement.
Here are some questions
and answers that you
need to know.
1. WHAT ARE THE CORE CHARACTERISTICS OF AR (TITCHEN, 2015)?

• Systematic
• Rigorous
• Reflective
• Situational
• Participative
• Future-Oriented
2. WHY IS ACTION RESEARCH USEFUL TO ME AS A TEACHER RESEARCHER?

• AR can help me to learn how to improve

my practice as a teacher in terms of
teaching methods, classrooms
management, preparation of the learning
environment, developing instructional
materials assessment .
• AR can help me learn more about a wider
range of research methods that I can use
in the future.
• AR can provide me more space to think deeply
about the issues that confront teaching and
learning.
• AR can help me engage with my mentor and
peers to enable me to enable me to me to
improve my teaching practices through action
research.
• AR can help me develop new knowledge which
is directly related to my area of specialization.
3. WHAT TYPES OF CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH STUDIES THAT I CAN
ENGAGE IN?

• Creating changes in the classroom

practices.
• Establishing effects of curriculum
restructuring.
• Enhancing new understanding of
learners.
• Teaching a new process to the students.

Research

In 2011, McNiff defined Action Research as a
form of inquiry that enables practitioners to
investigate and evaluate their work. Before that,
Corey, in 1953 viewed action research as a
recursive or repeated process proceeding through
spiraling cycle of planning, actions, reflections
and change.
