Section of a Body • Two methods are used to find Stresses on an Oblique Section of a Body • Analytical Method • Graphical Method Stresses on an Oblique Section of a Body subjected to a direct stress in two mutually perpendicular Directions Accompanied by a Simple Shear Stress • a useful graphical technique for finding principal stresses and strains in materials. Mohr’s circle also tells you the principal angles (orientations) of the principal stresses • In this representation normal stresses are plotted along the horizontal axis and shearing stresses along the vertical axis. • The transformation equations for plane stress can be represented in graphical form by a plot known as Mohr’s Circle. • This graphical representation is extremely useful because it enables you to visualize the relationships between the normal and shear stresses acting on various inclined planes at a point in a stressed body. • Using Mohr’s Circle you can also calculate principal stresses, maximum shear stresses and stresses on inclined planes.
