What is Biodiversity?
 BIODIVERSITY comes form two words BIO means “life” and DIVERSITY means
“variety”.
 It is the variety of all living things; the different plants, animals and micro
organisms, the genetic information they contain and the ecosystem they
form.
BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION
OBJECTIVES:
 To preserve the diversity of species.
 Sustainable utilization of species and ecosystem.
 To maintain life supporting system and essential
ecological processes
POINTS TO UNDERSTAND THE NEED
TO CONSERVE BIODIVERSITY
1. Biodiversity is an essential tool against climate change
 Healthy ecosystem mitigate climate change.
2. Biodiversity ensures food security
 Humans depend on biodiversity to eat.
3. Biodiversity fights disease
 As biodiversity declines, humans face greater risk of zoonotic disease and lose
potential cures for health problems across the spectrum.
4. Biodiversity supports communities
 People and communities across the globe depend on biodiversity to maintain their
livelihoods.
5. Biodiversity is already suffering from human actions
 Every animal and plant has a unique, essential role in nature.
How to conserve and protect biodiversity?

 First, unique ecosystem should be protected.

 It is important to use the resources wisely.
 Hunting and poaching of wild animals need to end.
 The creation of the reserves and protected areas must be done with great
care.
 It is necessary to reduce environmental pollution levels.
 Deforestation should be strictly prohibited.
 Environmental laws need to be strictly followed.
 To benefit and threatened plant and animal species, both their natural and
man-made habitats should be protected.
 Educating the public about biodiversity conservation is essential.
