Introduction :
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, encompassing the diversity of
species, ecosystems, and genetic material within them. It plays a crucial role in
maintaining ecological balance, resilience, and overall health of the planet.
Biodiversity includes terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems,
showcasing the interconnectedness of different forms of life. This richness of
diversity provides numerous ecosystem services, such as pollination of crops,
water purification, and climate regulation, making it essential for human
well-being and the sustainability of the planet.
Genetic Diversity: Within a species, there exists genetic diversity. This diversity
is crucial for species to adapt to environmental changes, resist diseases, and
ensure the survival of populations.
Species diversity Richness: The term "species richness" is often used to describe
the total number of different species in a given area. The higher the number of
species, the greater the species richness.
Evenness: Besides the number of species, species diversity also considers how
evenly distributed individuals are among those species. An ecosystem with
balanced representation of species has high evenness.
Genetic Diversity within Species: Species diversity is not only about the number
of different species but also about the genetic diversity within each species.
Genetic diversity is vital for species adaptation and survival.
Tissue Culture: Living cells or tissues from plants or animals can be preserved
and grown in vitro through tissue culture techniques, ensuring the conservation
of genetic diversity.
Conservation Breeding Programs: Controlled breeding of endangered species in
captivity helps increase their population size, genetic diversity, and fitness
before potential reintroduction into their natural habitat.Education and
Awareness: Ex-situ facilities often serve as educational hubs, raising awareness
about biodiversity conservation, the importance of ecosystems, and the threats
faced by various species.
Poaching and Illegal Trade: Illegal hunting and trade of wildlife, often driven by
demand for exotic pets, traditional medicines, or luxury goods, pose serious
threats to many species, particularly those already facing conservation
challenges
