State green mission
State Green Mission :
The Government
of Sikkim in 2006
launched a unique and
innovative programme
called “State Green
Mission” for raising
avenue plantations
along the roads and
beautification of all
vacant and waste lands
to further reinforce
wide spread recognition
of Sikkim being a Green
State.

THE ENVIRONMENT
CONSERVATION PROJECT
The State of Sikkim is located in the Eastern Himalayas
and has rich biodiversity and tourism potential. The
Department of Forest, Environment and Wildlife
Management (DFEWM) of the Government of Sikkim
launched a ten-year initiative in collaboration with
JICA through the Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and
Forest Management to strengthen the management of
natural resources and alleviate poverty in Sikkim
through participatory rehabilitation and management
of degraded forests and enhancement of the livelihood
of the local people by promoting ecotourism.
ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION
1. State Government passed and announced a Comprehensive
State Policy on Forest, Environment and Land Use 2000
based on the basic principle of conservation and sustainability.
  2. Forest Protection: One of the main objectives of the Forest,
Environment & Wildlife Management Department is the
protection and management of forests, water bodies and
alpine pastures. The State Government has brought about vital
amendments in the present Sikkim Forest Water Courses and
Road Reserve (Preservation and Protection) Act, 1988
(Amendment 2000) to make the specified clause more
stringent and harsh in enforcement. Offences such as illegal
felling of trees, encroachment and grazing in the Reserve
Forest have been made non‐bailable.

SIKKIM AGAINST PLASTIC!
• The tiny state of Sikkim nestled in the Himalayas in northeastern India has been
leading a green revolution of its own kind. Despite being small and isolated, and
with its people leading their lives in extremely tough mountainous terrain, Sikkim
has emerged as one of India’s environmental leaders.
• Sikkim, which in 1998 became the first Indian state to ban disposable plastic bags,
is also among the first to target single-use plastic bottles. In 2016, Sikkim took two
major decisions. It banned the use of packaged drinking water in government offices
and government events. Second, it banned the use of Styrofoam and thermocol
disposable plates and cutlery in the entire state in a move to cut down toxic plastic
pollution and tackle its ever-increasing garbage problem.
• The state government took up these drastic initiatives on the grounds that
disposable products which were in vogue in both rural and urban areas were
environmentally hazardous, generated a huge quantity of municipal waste and were
claiming a lot of space in landfills. And on plastic water bottles, the government
held the view that that the rampant usage of packaged drinking water in
departmental meetings and functions was adding an unnecessary burden on the
dump yards so it banned their use in official functions.

SIKKIM-the least polluted state of India
Sikkim is a small Indian State known for
its clean and green image. The State
enjoys good air and water envrionment
and hosts more than 25% of the
country's biodiveristy. Amidst several
economic and infrastructural
developments taking place in the State,
Sikkim has amicably sustained its natural
resources with hosts of environment
amelioration initatives. The Government
of Sikkim has imposed ban on use of
firecrackers, prohibited burning of
agricultural waste, banned the use of
styrofoam products, banned burning of
tyres, banned use of polythene carrybags
and chemical fertilizers. Sikkim has hosts
of flagship programmes like State Green
Mission, Ten Minutes to Earth etc.
WILDLIFE AND
PROTECTION
Wildlife conservation has become a worldwide significance. In the
field of wildlife conservation, Sikkim State has progressed a great
deal with the establishment of one huge National Park i.e.
Khangchendzonga National Park, one Biosphere Reserve known as
Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and eight Wildlife Sanctuaries
including one Faireanum Orchid Conservation Reserve, all
occupying as much as 42.54% of State’s total geographical area
under the wildlife protected area network including Biosphere
Reserve is remarkably the highest coverage amongst other States
in the country. The State has been able to set aside 51.68 % of the
State’s forest land area under the wildlife protected area network
including Biosphere Reserve for the protection and conservation of
State’s rich wildlife and biodiversity resources. Protection,
preservation and conservation is achieved through the people’s
participation represented by EcoDevelopment Committees (EDCs)
formed around the protected areas.

Initiatives taken by government to protect
wildlife-
 The Department of Forest, Environment & Wildlife Management in the state has been
adopting and implementing following strategies for smooth and effective management
of Protected Areas ie Sanctuaries and National Parks which are oriented towards
protection, conservation and preservation of pristine flora and unique Himalayan fauna
in the state.

 Restriction of thoroughfare in core zone and development of eco-tourism including

trekking by the adventure tourists only in buffer areas.

 Intensive management through organization of anti-poaching activities, trap demolition

and patrolling by the wildlife officials with the active participation of Eco-Development
Committees.
it is unlike in some other states in
Northeast Asia, where you may
still find forests – yet void of its
inhabitants – it is certainly also
thanks to the state's environmental
consciousness and the observance
of religious rules of Hinduism and
Buddhism that wildlife in Sikkim
today still has got habitat to thrive
in is Red panda, snow leopard,
musk deer, blue sheep, Himalayan
tahr, marmots, goral, barking
deer, langur monkey, Himalayan
black bear, different species of
leopard, Tibetan wolf, giant
badgers, martens and jungle cats
all belong to Sikkim's rich wildlife.
