Chicago is known for its
many innovations in a
variety of fields, from
natural history and
architecture to food and
science

The third largest city in the United States, with a population of nearly three million
people. The City of Chicago covers an area of 60,000 hectares and sits 176 meters above
sea level on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. The city is traversed by the
Chicago and Calumet rivers. Chicago's extensive parklands, including 3,000 hectares of
city parks attract an estimated 86 million visitors annually.
 The name "Chicago" comes from the French
interpretation of the Native American word
for "striped skunk," which was also the name
given to the wild onions that grew near the
Chicago river.
 Chicago has many nicknames, including the
Windy City, the City of Big Shoulders, the
Second City, and the City that Works.
 Chicago's most well known nickname, the
Windy City, was thought to be created by
newspapers in rival cities. Several publications
used the nickname as a reference not only to
the weather, but also to Chicago's politicians
and the bragging habits of its citizens.
Willis Tower, originally known as
Sears Tower, is the tallest building
in the Western Hemisphere at 110
stories. Four states, including
Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and
Wisconsin, can be seen from the
Skydeck Chicago of Willis Tower, and
its elevator is one of the fastest in
the world
In 1900, Chicago successfully reversed the flow of the Chicago River so it would empty
into the Mississippi River instead of Lake Michigan. This was considered a hugely difficult
and innovative engineering project, and it was also recognized as the largest public
earth-moving project ever completed.
Today, the Chicago River is dyed GREEN every year on St. Patrick’s Day!
The world's first elevated railway was installed in Chicago in 1892. The
popular transit is often known as the "L," which is short for "elevated.
Downtown Chicago is known as "the Loop," referencing the shadow the
elevated train tracks create in the area.
Last, but not least, Chicago loves to provide a taste of
its excellent food and summer atmosphere. Visitors
gather from all around the world to indulge in local fare
at the city’s largest outdoor food festival: The Taste of
Chicago". For five days in July, visitors can partake in
not just food, but music performances by local artists
and celebrities, including Carlos Santana and Kenny
Rogers.
