CANAL REGULATION STRUCTURES
Canal Regulation
The distribution of water from the main canal into different
branches and distributaries, in accordance with their relative
demand is called canal regulation
Distributary Head Regulator
A distributary H/R is provided at the head of the off-taking channel to
control the water supply entering in this new channel

Functions of H/R
• To regulate or control the supply of off-taking channel
• To control the silt entry into the off-taking channel
• To serve as a meter for measuring discharge
Cross Regulator
Cross-regulator may be required in the main parent channel
downstream of the off-taking channel, and is operated when necessary
so as to head up water on its upstream side, thus to ensure required
supply in the off-taking channel even during the periods of low flow in
the main channel.

Functions of Cross-Regulator
• Effectively control canal irrigation system
• Head up upstream to feed off-taking channel
• Absorbing fluctuations in various sections of canal system
• Often combined with road bridge or Fall structure --- Fall Regulator
