Irrational Numbers

• Introductio
n
• Irrational number, any real number that
cannot be expressed as the quotient of two
integers—that is, p/q, where p and q are
both integers.

• For example, there is no number among

integers and fractions that equals Square
root of√2.
•History of Irrational
numbers
• Traced back to the ancient Greek mathematician, Pythagoras
and his school of philosophy which believed that irrational
numbers didn’t exist.
• According to this belief all numbers, even ‘irrational’
numbers like pi and square root of 2, could be expressed as the
ratio of two whole numbers.
• However, Hippasus proved that was not the case and
brilliantly demonstrated the i n nity of irrational numbers.
•Why are Irrational numbers
important?
• Understanding irrational numbers is integral to a
concept of real numbers.
• irrational numbers are used across mathematics and
scienti c applications, including calculus, geometry
and measurement of the universe.
• Through these applications, we gain an in-depth
understanding of real-world issues like climate
change and space exploration.
• Conclusion
