PHOTOELASTICITY

 Light is used as a sensor

 Changes in optical properties of material under
deformation
 Gives picture of stress distribution around
discontinuities of materials

PRINCIPLE OF PHOTOELASTICITY
BIREFRINGENCE
• Phenomenon in which ray of light passing through a
material experiences two refractive indices.
• Observed in many optical crystals.
• Equipment used for visualization of stress field is
polariscope
POLARISCOPE
• Optical instrument that utilizes properties of polarized light
in its operation.
• For stress analysis, two types are used:
1. Plane (linear) polariscope
2. Circular polariscope

5
6
ISOCHROMATICS

 Isochromatic fringes are lines of constant principal

stress difference
• Source is monochromatic – dark and light fringes
• Source is white light – coloured fringes

7
8
ISOCLINICS

• These occur whenever either principle stress direction

coincides with axis of polarizer.
• Provide information about direction of principal stresses in
the model

9
10
FRINGE SHARPENING BY PARTIAL MIRRORS

• Bandwidth of isochromatic fringes is reduced

 Placing partial mirrors in parallel to photoelastic model
under load.
 It is done in circular lens type polariscope
