Title: To study metallurgical microscope.
Department of Mechanical Engineering, UET Peshawar, Jalozai campus.
Introduction:

Objectives 1. To study the micro-structure of the specimen.

2. To check the micr-scratches during the rough polishing.

Theoretical It is used to observe the microstructure of the specimen. The metallurgical

Background microscope is the most important tool of the metallurgist. It consist an
objective and an eye-piece. Its primary function is to reveal the details of
the object.
PRINCIPLE: - A horizontal beam of light from the light source is reflected
by means of a plane glass reflector downwards through the microscope
objective on the surface of the specimen some of this incident light reflected
from the specimen surface will be magnified and passing through the plane
glass reflector and magnified again by upper lens system of the eye-piece.
Constructional Details: - The table type microscopes are consist of
Different parts are,
Stage: It is the place on which the specimen is placed to observe the
microstructure.
Objective: These are the lens of different power used to increase the
resolution of the microscope. The important properties of an objective are:
1. Magnifying Power 2. Resolving Power.

It is the property by which an objective shows distinctly represented two

small adjacent bonds in the structure of the object. This is usually expressed
as number of lines per mm that can be separated which depends on the
numerical operator, the wavelength of the light used.
Eye piece: It is used to observe the image of the microstructure.
Working: Light microscope directs light on the surface of the specimen,
due to the irregularities on the surface of the specimen, light gets reflected
irregularly and as all the light incidental by the microscope does not go back
to the eyepiece, so these areas appear to be black and rest appears as white.
Thus, the microstructure gets visible.

Procedure 1. Observe the different parts of microscope.

2. Note the total magnification power marked on eye piece and objective
lens.
3. Find total magnification used.
4. Keep the etched sample under objective lens.
5. Observe from the eyepiece and try to focus the image by raising or
lowering the sample stage.
6. Use course and fine focusing for clear image.
7. By using light intensity knob, adjust the sufficient brightness.
8. Make the microscope off immediately after use.
Observations and
Discussion

Precautions 1. Never touch the lens of the microscope with your hands.
2. Don't look into the light.
3. Be cautious when handling slides
