Title
Exam (TOEFL)
• Last section of the exam – total of 50 minutes
• Writing is divided into 2 parts
1. Integrated writing (20 minutes): Read a passage (3 minutes), listen to a
related lecture (2 minutes) and you write and essay (20 minutes)
Key skills: summarising, active note taking, creating persuasive argument with
evidence.
2. Independent writing (30 minutes): 4-5 paragraph essay (about 300 -350
words) responding to a single question
Key skills: plan an essay structure, have a thesis
• The most important thing is clarity and effectively to convey ideas and
arguments.

Independent writing task: (30 minutes)

1.Some people believe that the best way to learn a new language is to immerse oneself in a country where the
language is spoken. Others believe that language classes in one's home country are just as effective. Which
do you agree with and why?
2.Do you agree or disagree with the statement that technology has made the world a better place to live? Use
specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
3.Some people believe that it is better to live in a small town, while others think that living in a big city is
preferable. Which do you agree with and why?

Introduction – answer the question! Make your thesis statement clear. This is not a

detective novel, we don’t need mystery

Body: present your evidence to support your thesis statement

Conclusion - no new ideas, reword what you have already stated. Reaffirm your thesis

statement
