SEXUAL

REPRODUCTION IN
HUMANS
OBJECTIVES

Define Sexual Reproduction

Draw and label the parts of the male and female reproductive systems

Annotate the male and female reproductive systems

WHAT IS SEXUAL REPRODUCTION?

• Sexual reproduction is a process where two different sex cells, called gametes,
come together to form a new individual.
• In humans, for example, the female egg cell and male sperm cell come together
during sexual intercourse to form a fertilized egg. This fertilized egg then
develops into a fetus and eventually a baby.
THE MALE
REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Part Function

Seminal Vesicle Opens into the sperm duct and produces seminal fluid which
combine with sperm to form semen. The secretion stimulate
the sperm to swim
Prostate Gland Opens into the urethra and produces and alkaline fluid which
neutralizes any urine in the urethra and stimulates the sperm
to swim
Sperm Duct/ Vas Muscular tube which links the testes to the urethra to allow
Deferens the passage of semen containing sperm
Urethra Muscular tube that carries semen and urine to the outside of
the body.
THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Part Function

Testes Oval shape, produces sperm and make male sex hormones

Penis Connective tissue with many blood spaces surrounding the

urehr. Becomes erect during intercourse to deposit sperm into
the vagina
Scrotum Contains testes and hold them outside the body to regulate
temperature for sperm production.
Epididymis Series of coiled tubules, which stores sperm
THE FEMALE
REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Part Function

Ovary Oval shaped, produces female sex cells (ova) and female sex
hormones
Oviduct/ Narrow tubes, with muscular walls. Carries the egg to the
Fallopian tube uterus, also the site of fertilisation
Uterus (Womb) Pear-shaped, cavity with thick, muscular walls where the
foetus grows during pregnancy.
cervix Ring of muscles which form the neck of the uterus, produces
watery mucus to help sperm swim to the uterus. Keeps the
neck closed during pregnancy.
THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Part Function

Vagina Passage from the uterus to the outside. Receives male penis
during intercourse, sperm is deposited here.
Urethra Carries urine from the baller, has no roles in reproduction.
