Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSPs)

Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices (IKSPs)

• These are local knowledge developed over centuries of experimentation and
are passed orally from generations to generation.
• It have been proven to contribute to the sustainability and productivity of
many ecosystems.
• Example of IKSP:

The Banaue Rice Terraces

• A living cultural landscape that can be traced
back as two millennia ago in the pre-colonial
Philippines.
• It is a dramatic testimony to a community’s
sustainable and primarily communal system
of rice production.
• Occasionally called the 8th wonder of the
world

The Muyong System

• The Ifugao’s system of forest sustainability.
• It is coined from a local dialect meaning forest or
woodlot.
• It is recognized internationally as an ideal forest
management strategy that is deeply ingrained in the
culture of the Ifugao people.
• It is perceived as:
• Forest conservation strategy
• Watershed rehabilitation technique
• Farming system
• Assisted natural regeneration strategy

The Lapat System

• It is a form of forest protection
strategy implemented by the Isneg
and Tinnguian people of Abra
province.
• It imposes taboo within designated
area over a period of time, which
prohibits the exploitation of natural
resources in this area.
• It enables natural recovery of the
forest from earlier anthropogenic
disturbances allowing trees and other
plants to regenerate and wildlife to
reproduce.

Other examples include:

• Indigenous or traditional dances
and music.
• Traditional designs and utensils.
• Traditional terms and expressions
• Indigenous human and animal

• Traditional food security
practices

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)
• It was established in 2015
• A major milestone in the organization’s
regional economic integration agenda.
• It envisions the bloc as a single market
with free flow of goods, services,
investments, and skilled labor across
the region.

“True to its original mission, the organization strives towards

peace and stability in the region: members have signed a treaty
pledging not to develop nuclear weapons, and most have agreed
to a counter-terrorism pact, which includes sharing intelligence
and easing the extradition process of terror suspects.”
The mission of the ASEAN Post-2015
Health Development Agenda (2016-2020)
includes:

• To promote a healthy and caring

ASEAN community, where the people
achieves maximal health potential
through healthy lifestyle;
• To have universal access to quality care
and financial risk protection;
• To live in healthy environment with
sustainable inclusive development
where health is incorporated in all
policies.
How do members of the ASEAN cooperate in the ASEAN Economic Community?

Answer: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) sought the expertise
of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) to consult various
sectors in the society to study how the Philippines can prepare itself in meeting the
ASEAN 2015 Goals.

The NRCP clustered these policies into four:

•Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, International Policies and Governance.
•Physics, Engineering, and Industrial Research, Earth and Space Sciences, and Mathematics.
•Medical, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
•Biological Sciences, Agriculture, and Forestry.
