MUSIC MODULE 1

BY: ALDE WAYNE P. QUINTERO

This lesson will help you master the different kinds of musical notes, rests and their time values. This will help you be confident not
only in reading and writing music but also in performing musical compositions.

Do you have a favorite song? What do you like about it? Different people like a song for different reasons. Some people like a
song for its meaningful lyrics. Others like a song for the sounds of the singer’s voice. However, many people agree that the rhythm of
the music is important in making a song beautiful and pleasant to listen to.

Have you seen a musical notation before? It is written on a piece of paper used by conductors, pianists, and other musicians
during a musical performance. In it, you will find musical symbols arranged in musical staves. Among these are symbols called
musical notes and rests
On a sheet of paper, draw the kind of note and rest being described.

1. A note that has a shaded notehead with stem, two hooks, and gets ¼ beat.
2. An open notehead with stem and gets 2 beats.
3. A rest that looks like number 7 and gets ½ beat.
4. A rest that looks like letter Z or number 3 and receives 1 beat.
5. An open notehead which receives 4 beats.

Kinds of Notes and Their Time Value
Musical symbols used to represent sounds are called notes. Each musical note has its
equivalent value or time duration to produce the correct sound. The longer a note is
sounded, the more beats the note receives
Musical symbols used to represent silences are called rests.
Each musical rest signifies an equivalent value or time
duration to stop awhile, pause, or keep silent for a moment
for the number of beat the rest symbol has.

Note: A dot after a note or rest increases the time value by half of its original
value
Identify the value of each note and rest. Write your answers on a sheet of
paper.

Study the notes and rests in each item. Given their respective time
