3 types of sentences
• Positive (+) Subject + V2 + the rest
• Negative (-) Subject + did not + V1 + the rest

For negative statements we use the verb did
before the regular verb in the first form (V1)
• Steve didn’t know how to jump
• Children didn’t want to eat the food
• Sarah did not like long journeys
• Students did not want to behave
• Did not = didn’t
Make negative statements from positive

For questions we place Did first, then we
have a subject, then a verb in the first form
(V1)

• Did they eat ice cream at 2 pm?

The verb to be is a strong verb and doesn’t need
help in questions and negative statements
