    Elysio de Carvalho was a controversial Brazilian intellectual born in 1880 in Penedo, Alagoas. He studied at Colégio S. João and the Seminary of Olinda from 1893 to 1895, and made his biggest contribution to Brazil's modernist movement through participating in the Week of Modern Art in 1922. He authored works on anarchism such as "A Greve" and "O Movimento Anarquista no Brasil" and founded the Universidade Popular d'Ensino Livre. He also held roles as a journalist and the Director of the Identification and Statistics Office of the Rio de Janeiro Police from 1911 to 1915.
