Definition of Boiler Mountings:
• Boiler mountings are the different fittings and devices which are necessary for
the operation and safety of the bolier. Usually these devices are mounted over
the boiler shell. According to regulation, the following mountings must be fitted
to the boilers.
The lists of boiler mountings are as follows:
• 1) Two Safety valves
• 2) Two water level indicators
• 3) A pressure gauge
• 4) A steam stop valve,
• 5) A feed check valve
• 6) A blow off cock,
• 7) An attachment for inspectors test gauge,
• 8) A man-hole,
• 9) Mud holes or sight holes.
• Lancashire and Cornish boilers should be fitted with high pressure and low water
safety valves. All land boilers should have a fusible plug in each furnace.

The feed pump is a pump which is used to deliver feed
water to the boiler.
27/03/2020 14
• The reciprocating pump consists of a pump cylinder and a piston.
• Inside the cylinder reciprocates a piston which displaces water.
• In a single –acting pump: the water is displaced by one side of the piston only and so the
water is discharged in alternate strokes.
• In a double-acting pump: the water is discharged in each stroke of the piston since the
water is displaced by both the sides of the piston.
• The reciprocating feed pumps are continuously run by steam from the same boiler to
which water is to be fed.

Injector:
• The function of an injector is to feed water into the boiler.
• It is commonly employed for vertical and locomotive boilers
• It does not find its application in large capacity high pressure boilers.
• Used: where the space is not available for the installation of a feed pump.
• In an injector the water is delivered to the boiler by steam pressure; the kinetic
energy of steam is used to increase the pressure and velocity of the feed water.

Injector: Advantages: Cont…
1 Low initial cost.
2 Simplicity.
3 Compactness.
4 Absence of dynamic parts.
5 Thermal efficiency very high (about 99%).
6 Ease of operation.
Disadvantages:
1. Pumping efficiency is low.
2. It cannot force very hot water.
3. Irregularity of operation under
extreme variation is steam
pressure.

Economiser:
An economiser is a device in which
the waste heat of the flue gases is
utilized for heating the feed water.
1) Independent type,
2) Integral type,
1) Type of fuel,
2) Type of fuel burning equipment, and
3) Rating at which the boiler and furnace
are operated.

Superheater :
Function : It is important accessory used to increase the temperature of the steam
above its saturation point.
Used : both on fire-tube and water-tube boilers.

Super heaters are located in the path of furnace gases so that heat is
recovered by the superheater from the hot gases.

Fig. Superheater
Cont…
Convective superheater makes use of heat in flue gases whereas a radiant superheater is
placed in the furnace and wall tubes receive heat from the burning fuel through radiant
process.
The radiant type of superheater is generally used where a high mount of superheat
temperature is required.
Fig. shows Sugden’s superheater installed in a Lancashire bolier. It consists of two steel
headers to which are attached solid drawn “U” tubes of steel. These tubes are arranged in
groups of four and one pair of the headers generally carries ten of these groups or total of
forty tubes. The steam from the bolier enters and leaves the headers as shown by the arrows.
• Fig. shows how the steam pipes may be
arranged so as to pass the steam through
the superheater or direct to the main steam
pipe.
• When the steam is taken from the boiler to
the min steam pipe, the valve V1 and V2 are
closed and V3 is opened; when the steam is
passed through the superheater i.e. when
the superheater is in action the valve V3 is
closed the valve V1 and V2 are opened.
• The path of the gases is controlled by the
damper which is operated by the hand

Steam Separator :
• The steam available from a bolier may be either
wet, dry; or superheated; but in many cases there
will be loss of heat from it during its passage
through the steam pipe from the boiler to the
engine tending to produce wetness.
