INTRODUCTION

• The quality of education in every society is largely


determined by the quality of its teachers.
• However, the quality of teachers is determined by the
level of their subject matter mastery and how they pass
on that subject matter to their learners, among other
factors.
• The ability of the teachers to carry out this duty
depends on how the trainee teacher is prepared.

INTRODUCTION

• Pre-internship is an essential component of all teacher


training programmes.
• During the pre-internship the trainee teacher practice
teaching under the supervision of a qualified
professional lecturer/teacher.
• This will enable trainee teachers to develop the
required professional skills, competencies, and a
positive attitude towards the teaching profession.

• It provides an opportunity for trainee/pre-service teachers
to adequately select topics and plan lesson/lessons
• It enables trainee/ pre-service teachers to develop
classroom managerial and organizational skills.
• It enables the trainee teacher to become committed and
competent full-time teachers.
• It also enables trainee teachers to develop all the
necessary skills required to be efficient teachers.

• The following are the roles of the trainee teacher:


1. Select any topic from a National Teaching Syllabus
(BASIC or SHS/TVET) in a subject related to your field of
study.
2. Using the GES NEW and OLD lesson plan formats,
prepare two lesson plans with the same topic.
3. Develop a Teaching Resource/Resource
4. Take Part in a number of Micro-Teaching Activities

THE ROLE OF THE SUPERVISOR
IN THE PRE-INTERNSHIP EXERCISE
• The supervisor is expected to check the attendance of
the trainee/pre-service teacher at every pre-
internship meeting.
• He or She is expected to expose trainee teachers to
the school internship programme.
• Provide professional leadership and guidance to
trainee teachers during and after the pre-internship.

THE ROLE OF THE SUPERVISOR IN THE
PRE-INTERNSHIP EXERCISE
• It is the duty of the trainer to take the intern through
the course outline that will be allocated to them
• The trainer is expected to follow the course outline
religiously to make the exercise a success
• He or She is expected to evaluate the Lesson plans of
each of the trainee teachers.
• He or She is to supervise and provide constructive
feedback to the trainee teachers.

CONCLUSSION

• It is compulsory for all trainers to go through a pre-internship


training programme that will equip them to train trainee
teachers.
• The trainers must understand teaching standards and exhibit
them in the micro-teaching exercise.
• Trainers must also know how to develop:
• 1. A Professional teaching portfolio
• 2. A Teaching Philosophy
• 3. A Reflective Practice
