Reforestation
Definition:
 It is the process of replanting trees in areas that have lost forest cover
due to either man-made or natural disturbances. When wildfires, climate
change, insects, disease and logging or other clearing practices damage
and destroy forests, reforestation is the process by which they are
restored.
 Reforestation or afforestation significantly decreases toxic gases from
the surrounding nature. This can reduce global warming. Forests are
naturally occurring carbon sink by removing greenhouse gas from the
air. Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and vehicles are
absorbed by the forest and trees.
Goal/s of Reforestation

 Improve human health by providing sustainable, high quality

supplies of food and water over time and by reducing the
incidence and transmission of diseases.
Benefits of Reforestation
Reforestation provides many benefits for us and our environment:
 protection from soil erosion by providing protective cover for soil from
rain;
 Roots of the trees store rainwater that helps reduce runoff and sediment
deposit after the storms
 Roots also recharges ground water supply, prevents transport of chemicals
into streams as well as prevents flooding.
 Greatly helps in carbon sequestration which helps mitigate the effects of
climate change
 Increase of habitat for millions of species, thereby improving biodiversity
 Increasing soil fertility
Adding trees allows the forest to expand its canopy, which block the sun’s
rays and holds in heat at night. Generally, reforestation can help us restore
our planet’s health moving towards the future.

Importance of Trees
 Basis of sustaining life on earth
 Absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen by photosynthesis
 Help in reducing soil erosion by binding the soil to their roots
 Absorb carbon from the atmosphere and store it in their wood and bark
throughout their lives, thus slowing gases’ build-up in the atmosphere and
eventually, the rate of global warming.

and roots

Status of Forestlands in North Cotabato
Of the 630,000
hectares area of
North Cotabato,
26% was natural
forest, about
18% are
plantations while
56% are non-
forest areas.

Programs and Environmental Lectures to Forest Communities &

OTHER ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN

 Random monitoring of reforestation projects implemented during the

previous administrations
 Regular monitoring of recent reforestation/ greening projects under the
Enhanced National Greening Program (eNGP)- (undertaken by our
ENR Extension Officers)
 Continuous conduct of mobile patrolling in the forest lands using LAWIN
monitoring system
 Conduct of checkpoint to monitor transport of forest products
 Regulating display and selling of forest products (e.g. lumber/ timber,
rattan, etc)
How can reforestation become successful?

 By planting and growing trees in areas that have been degraded

or deforested, reforestation helps the environment by
guaranteeing or accelerating the re-establishment of healthy
forest structure by re-growing the forest canopy and preserving
biodiversity within the ecosystem.
Can reforestation solve global warming?

 Trees are natural carbon capture and storage machines,

absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere through
photosynthesis then locking it up for centuries. It’s why
reforestation are touted as key solutions to the climate crisis.
Why is it difficult to regulate the
deforestation of forests?

 Because forests are located in the territories of some

countries or places which refuse to stop marketing them,
because the sale of logs and wood boards is a big
business and therefore, they are not willing to abandon
it.
How can we help in the reforestation efforts of our
community and eventually, in mitigating climate change?

 Recycling plastics by utilizing as containers for raising seedlings

 Collecting seeds of the fruits consumed & germinating/ growing them
 Avoid cutting of trees (trees are easily cut – in minutes - but difficult to grow
- as they grow for years)
 Allowing stumps of cut trees to re-grow naturally
 Planting of tree seedlings in vacant areas
 Avoid burning of grasslands/ forest lands to encourage the growth of other
species in an area
 Other simple ways we can do
Deuteronomy 20:19
“When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against
it in order to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding
an axe against them. You may eat from them, but you shall
not cut them down. Are the trees in the field human, that they
should be besieged by you?”

2 Corinthians 9:8
God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all
times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good
work.
