How do fuels release energy
Chemical fuels are substances that release energy by reacting with
substances around them,
Fuels like methane (CH4) burn in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon
dioxide and water. This process of combustion releases energy.
Fossil fuels
Fossil fuels are made from dead remains of plants and animals, called fossils
(decomposing plants and animals).
These fuels are found in the Earth's crust and contain carbon and hydrogen, which can
be burned for energy.
Examples of fossil fuels
Coal
Petroleum
Natural gas ,
Oil
Burning of fossil fuels
Coal and oil release sulfur dioxide gas when they burn, which causes breathing
problems for living creatures and contributes to acid rain.
Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide when they burn, which adds to the greenhouse
effect and increases global warming .
When fossil fuels are burned, they release nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, which
contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain.
Major sources of nitrogen oxide emissions include: Cars and trucks. Coal-fired power
plants.
A coal-fired power station or coal power plant is a thermal power station which burns
coal to generate electricity.
